Good bang-for-the-buck lightweight hiking shoe If you're looking for a lightweight, reasonably-priced, low-cut hiking shoe that breathes well, this may be the shoe for you. I hike the trails in our local state parks three to four mornings per week at a very fast pace, and I prefer lightweight, breatheable hiking shoes year-round due to heavy perspiration from every pore in my body. Previous mesh-type shoes from other well-known companies have not been able to tolerate the beating I give them during my hikes, so I'm hoping these Columbia Switchback 2 shoes will be up to the challenge. Fit is good, lateral support is good, and both wet and dry traction are good. Time will tell since I typically expect my hiking shoes to last about a year and I've had these shoes for just a couple of weeks now. So far, so good. November 24, 2012

Good, light shoe. I would actually give this 4.5 stars. I have only worn it 3-4 times on a short hike by my house, but it has performed quite well. It is very light and airy, great for this climate. Grip is excellent uphill, not as good downhill but still quite decent. Also, the sole in the heel area is slightly more narrow than my pair of Shastalavistas (which I LOVED so much, I wore them out!), but I suppose they did that to keep the weight down. At the original $85.00, this would be a decent purchase. At the $41.00 I got it for at the Columbia Outlet site, they were a steal! October 22, 2012

The inward lean This is lightweight shoe with a lot of mesh so is noticeably breezy as you're walking. As such may only be good for warm and dry weather. The fit is good as is the style.It has good support around the heel but the rest of the shoe is very soft, padded, and flexible. Great comfort while while still feeling secure. The traction is also quite good.The one detraction from this shoe is that there seems to be insufficient support under the heel on the inside edge. It's the strangest thing and never experienced it in a shoe before. I almost feel like my ankle is going to roll inward. I've worn them for a couple of weeks now and have decided to live with it since the shoe is otherwise so comfortable but I am reminded daily about its inward lean.I have other pairs of Columbia shoes as well as Adidas, Merrel, Nike, Montrail, and many others and have not experienced anything like it. This is enough to keep me from recommending it but, if that aspect doesn't bother you, it's a nice price for an otherwise nice shoe. September 20, 2012
Better than expected These shoes have turned out to more comfortable and of higher quality than I thought. The mesh feature keeps feet cool, the tread will grip on any surface, and the shoe has excellent cushion for the feet. September 19, 2012

Lightweight, comfortable. Wear them to work if you can get away with it. I bought these anticipating a lot of walking at an upcoming trade show. Only shoe I can wear I have had foot problems for over 50 years. Until I started wearing Columbia brand shoes, I was always at the foot doctor. Now I am foot problem free. Most of the new shoes are too narrow in the box of the shoe. I love my Columbia shoes and that I am without foot problems. July 4, 2012
Comfortable and airy I love these shoes. They are light and extremely comfortable. I tried on a pair of my friends and fell in love. My feet tend to sweat, so the fact that these allow a lot of air flow is wonderful. The shoes provide great support without the weight like a lot of other shoes. Men's Switchback The toe box is a bit small. My toes touch the ends of the shoe so I'd have to say the pair I got ran small by a tad. The tongue in the left shoe doesn't want to stay straight either.I can't speak about functionality yet as they haven't been on slickrock - and probably never will. I was hoping for Merrill quality but didn't get it. Of course, for half the price of Merrills, my expectations were unrealistic. June 10, 2012
Holding up well I've been wearing these shoes for nearly 8 months probably 5 days a week and they still look in great condition. I've found them to be really comfortable as a lightweight everyday shoe. Pretty good fit and very breathable.I'll be honest and say I haven't done any hiking or trail running in these so I'm not sure if they would hold up as good under those conditions. April 17, 2012

Great Versatile Shoe! I found this shoe to be very versatile. It's very light and has a soft cushion inside. These are very important to me as a Bass Angler because when I'm standing for more than eight hours I experience less fatigue especially to my back. Switchback a little disapointed in the color after seeing the swatch on the internet. too Olive Drab. thought they might have been a little more greyish.but they are lightweight which is what I was after. comfortable so far - still need a little more break in time. Shoe too Large Unfortunately, when these shoes arrive, they were too large and had to be sent back. This was especially disappointing as I ordered the same size as a previous pair of Columbia shoes that fit great.Due to the size issues, I was not able to try out these shoes, so have no comment about the function. Great Shoe I have found Columbia to be the right shoe for my work in the Rainforest of Guyana. The Omni tread soles keep me from slipping on the wet terrin. The comfort and look of the blue and gold Men's Switchback 2 is by far the best tennis/hiking shoe I have ever wore and so light weight that my legs stay fresh long into the day. Very Comfortable! I had a older pair of Columbia similar hikers for a few years and replaced them recently with similar by LL Bean. I found the Beans to be painfully uncomfortable and returned them and went back to the Switchbacks.They are so comfy from the first time I wore them and I put arches in them and wear them all day. I can't recommend them enough. I got mine from Cabelas and will certainly buy Columbia shoes again when these or others need replacing.They are well build, durable and water repellent plus comfy. Light-weight and comfortable I bought these shoes to replace a worn out pair of sneakers that I use for my daily activities. The shoes are lightweight and comfortable, but I worry that they may not be very durable. I've used them for about two weeks now and the rubber "cushion" area has abrasion and compression wear and tear. If the shoes last six months, I'd be happy to buy another pair. September 11, 2011
Great shoe but 1 slight problem Like the shoe, like the looks, like the feel, like the tread, like the weight, like the coloring, like the breatability, like the quality, but the tongue has a problem as the stitched transition of fabric (gray to light gray as seen above) is just in the wrong location and there isn't enough padding to cover the pressure from the shoelace. The lacing pushes on the bunched up stitching which then rubs against me. I can't tighten the laces up as much as I would like to. August 24, 2011
