Men’s Whirlibird™ Parka 4.6 5 67 67
NOT waterproof After less than an hour in a constant mild drizzle, this jacket failed to keep me dry. This by far the worst product I have ever spent money on. I am beyond disappointed. April 25, 2012
Great Parka So far I love my Whirlibird Parka. I've owned it for about 3 mths. I live in New England and although we had a mild winter on the few cold days this parka kept me warm and comfortable. I love the dark blue of the Abyss. There's a little more white on the coat that I would like but I can live with it. I'm 6'3" and 250lbs so I got the tall size and the parka fits great even on the arm length. Time will tell how well it wears, however so far this parka has met my high expectations. March 29, 2012
A bit big...for me. I ended up going on a ski trip on a couple very warm days (temps from 60-72ish) and I ended up removing the liner and hood from the jacket and opening any flap I could (under the arms). All in all, I did sweat, but I don't blame the jacket for this. The jacket felt great and did a great job protecting me from the slush and ice. My only observation/complaint is that this jacket was a bit large for my frame. I bought a large and it was rather long and just a bit too big in all other directions....I know a medium would have been too small. I would still highly recommend this jacket. March 28, 2012
Love the jacket, but too large & can't wear it NEGATIVE - I chose this particular 3-in-1 as it was the shortest offering, but it was WAY too large for my small frame. I bought a SMALL but it fits my 5'7" nephew. I compared it to my size SMALL jacket made by a competitor, & it is much larger than my other 3-in-1. Sleeves are 4 inches longer and the body is long by about the same amt. Lacks a 2 way zipper which may not be a problem if the jacket was shorter. Can't sit without hiking up the jacket or unzipping The snowskirt even when unsnapped, is uncomfortable and makes the lower part of the jacket too constricting as it "catches" against my pants. Inside jacket does NOT have zippered handwarmer pockets, only a snapbutton. PLUS - quality is really good. Omni-Heat technology is "the bomb". Nice to have underarm venting.Lots of pockets. Inner jacket fits very well, unlike the outer jacket. Nice to have a removable hood which can be stored in the inner large goggle pocket. Both outside shell & inner jackets have a goggle pocket. Sheds water like a duck. March 26, 2012
Last coat I will have to buy for a long time I ordered the coat during a snow storm and it arrived just in time for the weather to warm up - no problem - I simply unzipped the outer shell and had a nice light jacket for the day. The next morning was quite a bit colder, so I was able to just wear the Omni-heat liner. The thing I noticed right away with the Omni-heat is that the coat was not cold when I first put it on - it was instantly warm. I was worried that I would get too hot, but that has not been a problem so far. Overall, I am very pleased with the jacket and shell. March 22, 2012
My "whiribird" coat is all I could ask for and more I used my new coat on a recent ski trip and we had several types of weather conditions. Overcast, cloudy, 19 degrees and a 30 mph wind. We had snow, blowing snow, and then had 45 degree sunny with 25 mph wind. My coat adapted to all these conditions and at no time was I ever cold. The "Omni-Tech" waterproofing was up to the task, and the "Omni-Heat" was a very nice added plus, and came through as avertised. Great pockets, and plenty of them for most everything. My next coat will be a "Whirlibird" uless you can some how come up with something better! Good luck on that one!! Thanks Columbia.....WELL DONE. I'm 60 yrs. old- 5' 10" and 143 lbs. and I ordered the Large size. March 19, 2012
Too Small I admit that I am a big guy. I usually wear a XXL . All of my other clothes and jackets are that size and they fit just fine. This jacket was too tight around the shoulders and upper back. This was very disappointing as I was looking forward to using this jacket. I am not sure if they have something that would fit me. March 16, 2012
I will never wear any other Parka other than Columbia Excellent, Excellent, Excellent!!!! Jacket looks good, feels good and is the warmest jacket I've ever known. I've worn several other brands that worked just fine, but this Whirlibird is unmatched. The new umniheat technology makes you giddy just to wear it. I personally hate the cold but I go outside just to enjoy the experience of such a great jacket. Since I tried it several of my freinds now own one and they too can't believe how awesome it is. If there was any thing negative to say, it would be that its to Blame warm. What a problem to have huh. Most of the time all you need is the inner shell until the weather gets extreme. Thanks Columbia for making such a great JACKET!!!. March 12, 2012
Great Parka for Exceptional Price Fantastic construction..... really, really warm. Omni-heat is not a gimmick... I mean this parka a WARM. For those reviewers who feel this parka fits larger then true size.... maybe that was your production batch? I am a true XL in everything.... including several other Columbia tops and jackets. I was forced to return the original XL I ordered for an XXL. The chest of the original XL was very tight... and the arms were not only too short, but really really tight. Definitely size up if you think you are on the edge or plan to wear anything but a t-shirt underneath this thing. (Or if your biceps/forearms are larger than an average 11 year old girl.) Also, I would have liked this jacket to have a cinching waist cord like most other parkas have. I know this isn't a fashion show item, but I look pretty "Charlie Brownish" in this thing.... a waist cinch would make this the best parka I have ever owned... at ANY price. March 7, 2012
great parka Very comfortable, very warm. Could use some insulation in the hood. Other than that, an excellant parka. March 4, 2012
Perfect. I love it. Best coat I've ever worn. March 1, 2012
Fantastic Jacket! Got this jacket specifically for skiing/snowboarding. Fits nicely (although just slightly large, however leaves plenty of room to layer. I am 5'9.5" at 160lbs, athletic build), very functional, and looks great. Went snowboarding for a day at Stratton Vermont the week I got this jacket. The conditions that day were not the greatest: 14-18 degrees F at the peak with wind gusts of 60mph (!) and very icy. The jacket kept the elements out very nicely, and kept me warm! (I had two layers on the inside--a thermal shirt and a cotton long sleeve turtle neck.) Also very solid construction. Needless to say, I am EXTREMELY pleased with this jacket and hope to wear it for many years to come. February 26, 2012
Skiing in my Whirlibird Parka Just got done skiing 4 days in Gstaad. My new Columbia parka was great!! Plenty warm and great space for gear. Used all the features including the powder skirt, media pocket, inner liner and outer shell. Wore just the liner when going out for dinner. Opened up the vents on the shell when the skiing heated up. Stayed dry, warm, and had no limitations in motion. I highly recommend this coat! February 23, 2012
This product its perfect Perfectoooo Columbia brand is really good and dutiful to his line, for men and women is really of great use in everyday life of the country depending on where you live February 19, 2012
Whirlibird Parka I love my new Columbia parka. It keeps me warm and dry. I almost get too hot while shoveling snow, not a bad thing. My last winter parka I would get cold while shoveling. Thanks Columbia, Deb February 19, 2012
Great for keeping warm I originally bought the coat to go skiing in the Swiss Alps. Well, the trip got cancelled, but the European cold snap came and I needed it none the less. It did an excellent job of keeping me warm in 15F degree weather. The shell aspect allowed to shed some warmth as the temperatures rose. I highly recommend this coat. February 18, 2012
Wonderful This is the best jacket. Stylish, warm and durable. It is everything it says it is supposed to be. February 17, 2012
Men's Whirlibird Parka Great quality and insulation. However, the hood is not insulated and, with a woolcap on, it's a bit small. February 14, 2012
Warm and functional this jacket is very comfortable, movement isn't inhibited. Has done well with keeping me dry in the rain so far. it gets so hot I find myself using the side vents often! The liner and shell work nicely on their own as well. Not worried about snow getting in; the sleeves, powder skirt, and neck close up well enough. I can wear a t shirt and thin base layer underneath, but if you really want to layer up, I would go a size larger. February 11, 2012
So far, so good. Warm. I had a Bugaboo jacket for almost 7 years and it was time to change. Decided to go with the Whirlibird. It has been warm and the quality is good. I would definitely have wanted it to have one more internal mesh pocket instead of one. Fitting: got a Medium and my chest size is about 38''. Height is 5'8". Fits well. January 31, 2012
Excellent All Around Winter Coat I purchased the Whirlibird for general, everyday winter use. Using the size chart I noticed I'm between a S and M. I'm an average to slightly slim build, but decided on a medium and it was definitely the best choice. However, when wearing a heavy sweatshirt it's a little tight in the chest. Nothing crazy, it just bunches up the loose fitting clothing a little in that area. The vents and assorted pockets are great. The main exterior hand pockets are nicely lined so that keeping gloveless hands warm is possible. The insulation level is very good for the 20-40 deg days I've worn it in so far. I'm sure it will keep me warm even when it gets colder. I notice the effect of the Omni-Heat reflective liner, especially when I'm just wearing a T-shirt. Going out in windy, snowy, upper 20s days isn't a problem with just a T-shirt underneath this cost. Wind blockage is excellent at the neck, cuffs, and waist. The elastic snow protection band around the waist is noticed when you first put the coat on and zip it up, but I forget it's there afterward. I've had no chauffing around the neck or wrists from this coat. Range of montion on the arms is excellent and uninhibitted. The various layers of this jacket also provide a great deal of flexibility when the warmer days arrive, or engaging in some winter outdoor physical activity. There are a couple options/configurations to make sure you stay warm but don't overheat. Overall, I would defintiely recommend this jacket to someone who is looking to stay warm in the winter months, whether they're active outdoors or not. January 30, 2012
Almost perfect It's warm, it looks good, the only problem is that the inner interchange layer seems not well meshed with the outer shell: It is very easy for one of the snap buttons at the bottom of the jacket that connects the two layers to become undone if you move around a bit. I'm a pretty skinny guy, and I got a medium, so if you're physically larger than me (which is not hard, haha), be aware that this may be a problem. January 25, 2012
Love it! We ordered a medium for my husband, based on the size chart, and it was too small. Exchanged at the Mall of America Columbia store for a large and he loves it! The red is very natural, not bright like it shows online sometimes. January 24, 2012
Great function, but not very durable I ordered the jacket, and happily wore it for about a week. Awesome function, look, and fit, but after a few days, one of the buttons snapped off, and some parts appeared to begin to fray. I am hoping that it was just a manufacture error, but hopefully it will be fine. January 23, 2012
This product has great features. It is warm and comfortable. Good looking. January 23, 2012
Columbia for everyday and I do mean everyday. My Whirlibird is a lot warmer than my old Titanium jacket and a few inches longer. It is almost as warm as my down jacket and it is waterproof. The only problem I see with it is, The main zipper doesn't have a second slider at the bottom so you can unzip it just a few inches and still leave the primary zipped-up around your neck and chest. The liner is one of the warmest I have worn. I have really enjoyed wearing the jacket, but has not been warm enough to wear just the shell or liner by themselves. I have worn North Face gear and Patagonia gear, but most of my gear including walking shoes and snow boots are Columbia. I will continue to buy Columbia products as long as you make a superior product, make junk and I will buy one of the other brand names I have spoke of. Thanks for all the great products and keep up the good work. Michael Engalnd January 21, 2012
Boys Bugaboo parka Nice jacket!! Not too bulky. Perfect for a fussy 5 1/2 year old. Fits a little big but I am, sure it is because he is between sizes. Should last a couple of winters. January 21, 2012
Great coat Great coat. Gave it the first snowball fight test today. It did well. Side note: The plastic hanger broke during shipping. It was pure luck that the sharp edges didn't cut or rip the inside of the liner. Including a hanger is a nice thought, but doesn't work out so well when it meets reality. So, stop packing the hangers! January 15, 2012
Men's Whilibird Parka This was a Christmas present for my husband. He picked it our from your website (and emailed it to me). He loves the parka. Now all we need is some snow so he can go skiing. His old parka was a Columbia product, so he is brand loyal. January 14, 2012
as advertised Columbia has always made very nice products, this parka is no different very warm comfortable and waterproof. shell seem to be a bit large for me , but the liner seems to fit me perfect. January 8, 2012
Cozy comfortable Perfect fit, awesome price and quality. The materials of this parka are made to last a lifetime and once you wear it you wouldn't want to take it off. It is so warm as it is comfortable. Worth every penny. Great job Columbia. January 5, 2012
Best skiing jacket EVER I got this jacket for Christmas just before going skiing with my family in Vermont and it was incredible. One day 10 inches of snow came down and I not only couldn't tell but I was warm too. It got to the single digits Fahrenheit and windy on our last day and no matter how fast I skied the wind couldn't touch me. The omniheat is amazing, you could actually feel the heat there after you take it off. It fits and feels great, and it has a handy strap around the bottom that you can close to keep the wind from coming up your jacket. If you care about look, it's very nice with vibrant colors and a sleek black trim unlike the gray trim in my older coat. The insert looks good on its own as well. Columbia really hit this one out of the park! January 4, 2012
Great all-around jacket I bought this to replace a Titanium Parka from '02 which I thought was an excellent coat. Today was the first day out with it in something approaching serious western NY winter weather (we've had it pretty easy). The Whirlibird was every bit the equal of my old Titanium. The Omni-heat makes for a parka that's warm & comfortable when just standing around, but not overly hot during strenuous activity such as hiking or shoveling snow. As an outdoor photographer I'm either climbing around to get into position or having to sit still waiting for the right moment. The 3-in-1 design makes it great for travel when conditions can vary. It appears that this will be my go to jacket for most anything I do. January 3, 2012
Christmas Coat for picky man He loved it !!! This coat was perfect for the man who did not want to give up his 10 year old "broken in" frayed coat. The minute he put it on he was sold ..... comfortable & warm for our daily Pennsylvania winter. The quality is superb, the fit perfect, we are extremely satisfied with the purchase. Interesting - he has not worn or mentioned the "old" coat since he received the new Columbia. Thanks!! January 3, 2012
Great Jacket This jacket is very warm! The coldest its been so far 16-20F. The only issue I have is that the jacket gets stained so easily. This part bugs me. But the jacket is so warm January 3, 2012
Great coat, simple as that I think its a great coat. Not much else to say. I've recommended it to several people whom also liked the styling and feel of the coat. The Omni heat keeps you very warm without causing sweating. The hood is the only thing I didnt really care for its more for wind and rain than anything else. But I totally intended on taking it off anyway so its perfect for me. Just a heads up to anyone thinking it may also keep them warm. December 30, 2011
This product is fantastic! My daughter and I ordered this coat for my husband. He's a big guy and we were concerened with the fit. He has very broad shoulders and muscular arms. The coat is a wonderful fit. Sleeve length was just right, fit his shoulders and arms. He LOVED it!! December 29, 2011
AWESOME COAT! Love everything about this coat. The only thing to consider is it fits a little smaller than my previous Columbia coat- the Gizzmo. I wore an XL in that and I needed a XXL in the whirlibird. Other than that, this coat is made well, very warm and with my discount, I got it for a great price. Thanks Columbia for another reliable product that will give me years of use. December 29, 2011
Super Cozy. Super Warm. A snowmobile jacket, a waiting in the bitter cold jacket, an everything jacket! This is probably the most comfortable jacket I've worn to date. The interior is a very flashy, very warm coating. Exterior is a durable, water-resistent material. You can take out layers easy enough and detach then re-atach the hood within seconds. It's all quite simple. P.S. I wear larges with all other apparel but the medium for this is still even a little big. December 28, 2011
Great coat - inside elastic is tight around waist when zipped up. Great quality. Regarding the fit: the coats are true-to-size, but the elastic around the waist in the interior of the coat is really snug when the coat is zipped up. A few of us had to go a size up because of this, making the rest of the coat too large. We unsnapped what we could inside the coat and it worked ok. Suggestion: add 2" in the bottom interior elastic to make these really true to size! Overall, a great coat. December 28, 2011
First Thoughts I just recieved my new parka a few days ago and it arrived just in time for the snow. On initially trying this jacket I also looked at the Lhotse Mountain Parka and found the fit of the Whirlibird better for me. Both seem to be great quality jackets but the Whirlibird was just more comfortable. I am about 5'11" and 160 pounds, I have fairly long arms and a small waist so I thought the medium might do better but the fit is great with the large and the elastic at the bottom keeps the wind out. I have not had it long enough to give much about the durability of the jacket but it seems like it will last. The only complaint I have so far is that there are no thumb holes in the zip out liner to help keep the sleeves down and inside your gloves. Not a totally necessary feature but would be a nice one to have. Hopefully it will see me through several winters. I think there is a pretty good chance it will. December 27, 2011
Too small for a large I have had the same Men's large Whirlibird for the past 20 years and was very satisfied with it but alas it was not made of steel so I ordered a new one, finally. Much to my surprise, the current large is smaller than the 20 years ago large. My old jacket, that I still wear, fits me very well but the new one was too tight around the neck and too tight in the chest and shoulders. Why you would make a smaller jacket when the girth of America has radically increased over the last 20 years beats the heck out of me. I am 6'3" and 185 pounds which should not be an extra large. Go figure. I am now in the hunt for other brands. Seems like you lost a customer. December 27, 2011
Does not perform when you want it too...Not for Minnesota ! The inner layer with Omni heat tech. is stupendous but outer layer is not that good. @ below 30 Deg F with slight wind , I tend to feel chills @ the back & shoulder .This is due to the fact that outer layer is no btter than a normal raincoat. Also , during skiing I observed that it is not much breathable. Sweats gets accumulated during the activity & you feel helpless. Does not perform when you want it too...Not for Minnesota ! I do not think it is value product & would rather puchase any other jacket with only inner layer . December 26, 2011
Good to go! My son is very happy with his coat! We ordered it slightly larger, for growth and layering. Keeps him warm and dry. December 26, 2011
Nice Jacket but size is a bit large I brought this jacket for my father, as my dad is quite short (5 feet5) and quite thin, so I picked size S for him. The jacket is not very true to size. It is a bit large. Other than this, it is a great jacket, very warm and with good quality. December 26, 2011
True to size and looks great! This parka is everything it states and more. The liner jacket is perfect for cool days and looks great alone, but with the parka is toasty without being bulky. No restricted movement due to bulk. Love it! December 21, 2011
Great Ski Parka At A Great Price I bought a Whirlibird parka Dec 2010 for skiing in the Northeast. I'm very happy with my decision. The interchange design really does give you 4 season use. In spring, summer, and fall I used the shell alone as a rain jacket when it wasn't really cold but wet. In spring and fall when it was cold but dry, I used the liner as a lightweight jacket. The liner also saw some use on the beach on summer nights. As for fit, I'm 6' 0" tall and weigh about 215 lbs with a 36" waist and 45" chest. I can usually buy a L size in jackets but in this case I'm glad I checked Columbia's size charts. According to their charts, I was either at the very top end of the L size chest measurement or the XL if I wanted some room. I went with the XL and it's perfect. The extra room allows me to have a base layer + shirt or fleece underneath and still allows me to move without restriction. So my advice is to forget your "usual" S, M, L , or whatever and pay close attention to Columbia's size charts. If you do that, you should get a good fit. OK, the big question.....warmth on the slopes. This jacket is fantastic. The Omni-Heat technology really does seem to work. I can ski all day without either overheating and sweating or getting cold as the sun sets after 8 hours on the slopes. With the hood, pit zips, powder skirt, soft fleece around the collar, wind blocking, and water repellency, there are plenty of options to adjust the jacket to your exertion level so you stay warm and dry all day. And a huge plus.....the Whirlibird isn't bulky or restrictive. It's comfortable for me over a wide range of temps and activity levels. I like it so much, I just bought one for my oldest son for Christmas 2011 while my youngest son has a kids Bugaboo Tech jacket waiting for him under the tree. For the price, I think this is one of the best ski jackets on the market. Highly recommended! December 17, 2011
Awesome I will not try to compare it to other brands of products of the same brand since i have no idea how the other ones are. I am extremely happy with the jacket, it was expensive but I have never doubted for a second that it wasn't worth every penny, the design looks great and it has tons of little features that make it surprisingly comfortable, the people at columbia care about making excellent products December 17, 2011
whirlibird parka It has lots of excellent features. The size ordered is true to the size measurments that they provided. It has a detachable hood which is nice and lots of warmth without feeling bulky. Lots of pockets. A good buy for the price. December 9, 2011
best all around winter jacket This is my 2nd columbia jacket & I just love it. I gave up driving (for the most part) 7 yrs ago, so I walk or take public tranportation everywhere. This jacket with the inner liner by itself is great down to about mid 30's & with the shell on top a lot lower. The omni-heat is really fantastic. I do like the snug fit around the waist. Nice new feature. Thanks Columbia!! December 7, 2011
