Reviews

Rated 5 out of 5 by 3 reviewers.
Rated 5 out of 5 by Black Ridge lives up to most expectations considering how much Columbia has changed gear traits over last 15 years I owned an OmniTech 3-in-1 beginning in December 2001 before living in England for 5 months. (Rain & cold: Woohoo!) I continued to use it all the time once I returned to the states, from outdoor adventures to daily use. It was an incredible jacket until one day the zipper that attached the hood broke. Upholding their highest standards of product quality and of customer service, Columbia tried to repair it but could not. It was a sad day. They issued me an e-credit. To my disappointment I could not find a 3-in-1 with the same aspects as my original, especially all the great pockets (I had 7 total one the shell and 3 on the liner). They have nothing that compares to the versatility today; part of this is because of the puff jacket liners now included with most of their 3-in-1s and how they, while warm, don't hold up the the normal nicks and dings of daily use that a fleece can handle. The biggest challenge was finding something with underarm vents in the shell AND the zip-in fleece liner. Like I wrote before, NOTHING in Columbia's closet exists like that now. I used part of the resulting e-credit to buy this wonderfully WARM (polartec 300) fleece zip, with PITS ZIPS! It is the ONLY one with them I could find. It is the warmest I have ever owned and don't mind the two pieces. Actually it's better this way. This shell is perfect for those cold days (yes, we do have cold weather in the south and we know heat and humidity) and I paired it with the Loch Lamond waterproof shell for staying dry and warm. I'm a deceptively large guy at 6'2", 255lbs (most people can't figure out where that last 30 are). Depending on the company I wear anything from an XL to a 3X. Fortunately the XL is perfect without being fitted. The "modern classic" and "active" fits are accurate. (Measure yourself so you don't waste time guessing on a size since sizing has become so varied from company to company.) The former is comfortable and can easily handle layers. Go a size up in anything that is an "active" fit so you can layer, unless you have the funds to by multiple jackets. I do have two dislikes about this fleece. First I am fairly sure that Columbia does not line their fleeces any longer. I did much reading about Columbia products before purchasing the Black Ridge, include many, many, many reviews. I found a number of them pointing out a lack of nylon liners in the fleece jackets. The lining may have been part of the warmth factors in 2001 but the ease of putting the jacket on and taking it off was a key factor of having the nylon. (If you have ever worn a nice suit you know what I'm talking about.) Now there is a little struggle, having no liner as the fleece "grabs" at almost everything I would wear under it. It was not a deal-breaker though. The Black Ridge is likely to keep me much, much warmer than the original titanium fleece liner. My second dislike, and still not a deal breaker, is the lack of a 2-way zipper, on both the main zip and the pit zips. The single zipper seems stronger enough but the two-way zip added layers of versatility that are now gone. Both detractors lead to to dock a rating star. I wanted to explain specifically why. While it would have been better to get it on sale, it will be completely worth the price of it lasts me at least 15 years. April 1, 2016
Rated 5 out of 5 by High Quality and Warm This is a great jacket and worth the price. Quality is true Columbia. This jacket is very warm and fits true to size. I will definitely buy another...when they go on sale! January 31, 2016
