Rated 5 out of 5 by Jacket and Bibs I have owned several pairs of these for as long as I can remember. I believe I actually own four outfits jacket and bibs now. I rotate them in and out of use through out my midwest hunting season. I have not to this day found a warmer style or a better choice in quality and performance of how well they hold up and work to the environment. They are very good at knocking the brutal wind down, and keeping you warm especially when you layer up with just a simple thermal underwear under them. I am 6'1" about 200 lbs. and I purchased the "L" for both jacket and bibs and they fit perfect even with layers under them. November 13, 2014
Rated 1 out of 5 by Runs a little big.... Ha Finally got the coat in the mail yesterday.... Soon as I saw it I was like what the.... When they say runs a little big, they weren't kidding... I'm not a big guy by any means but normally I wear a large for something like this for layering up for winter. Based on other reviews, I went with a Med. and it was still huge on me.... sleeve length was past my fingers when fully extended, and was just huge all over.... I'm 5-11 160lbs my buddy was at the house, he's probably 6-1 255 and I had him try it on and it was close for him.... He said he normally wears a XXL.... I say again, this was a Medium! Though I didn't get to wear it outside, it is merely a wool shell with no lining in it what so ever.... Very itchy and I don't see how it would stop the wind.... So I got free shipping to get it here and had to pay $14 to send it back.... Not a happy camper.... November 12, 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 by Nice, but a few reservations.... Nice idea and pretty good execution. Except you need to be aware that the recycled "wool and unknown fabric" form a relatively loose weave and the coat has no wind blocker. Do not confuse this fabric with tightly wound construction of more expensive coats like, say, Filson's. This doesn't rule the garment out by any means, but does affect how I'd use it. What this means to me is: 1. I probably won't wear it to hunt in wind above 15 mph without a blocking fabric either under or over, and 2. I would wear the coat in cool to cold weather if I were working hard because the loose weave lets the coat vent heat and sweat very well, which can be a real boon when hiking or climbing or dragging a deer back to the truck. I am not sure how protective the loose weave would be in the rain; time will tell. Another point: such lining as there is is taffeta cotton and much of this lines the hood. While it is comfortable, and I'm sure keeps the cost of the garment down, it seems like a strange place to use cotton. if I sweat heavily enough (and I often do), I could easily wet out the lining in the hood. Wet cotton can be deadly when wet, and contradicts one of the key reasons for using wool in a garment actually meant to be used in the outdoors, i.e. that it retains some warmth when wet.. I'd have lined it with a different fabric, something a little quicker drying. I will be sure to wear some other hat to serve as a barrier from the lining. This jacket (and the accompanying bibs) should be a nice break form the Gore-Tex, nylon, and polyester clothes I normally end up wearing. If I've learned anything over 50 years in the woods, it's that no garment is perfect; each demands careful and selective use. I am sure this one has its niche. Time will tell how useful this jacket will be, and at the price, I can afford to experiment. November 6, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great Hunting Coat A buddy of mine has this coat and told me how warm it was so I decided to purchase one as well. One of the best purchases ever in terms of a warm hunting coat. On cold windy days the coat is awesome. I recently purchased one for my daughter so that she can be as warm as I am on those cold hunting trips. Thanks Columbia for a great product. December 23, 2013
Rated 4 out of 5 by Monarch Pass Jacket Great jacket - I use it for layering. My only suggestion would be to build in a liner. It is typically my outer layer, and the cold wind can blow right through you heading back to camp on the four wheeler if you don't have a wind-resistant layer underneath. The quality is excellent. Medium to heavy-weight wool, and has an excellent fit. No rips, tears, or missing buttons in 3 years of hunting. November 27, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Jacket. I have used this jacket for many years. I honestly don't think you can hurt it. Tough as nails. One thing about it is that it is WARM to say the least. It has to be cold out. I use it for late season guideing, hunting, and running my trap line. They run a bit large in size. I am 5'9" tall and 140 lbs. Small fit me best. Awesome product for cold winter adventures. January 2, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great jacket. Great jacket. It fits well, and functions great. The thing I like most about the jacket is that it does not feel bulkey for a wool jacket. The hood fits well, and keeps you very warm. It covers your head well, while allowing you to see well with it up. I find myself always wearing this jacket when glassing ridges in Eastern Oregon. The camo pattern blends in well to the high desert. November 23, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by Best coat for sneaking through thick timber This coat is the mainstay of my hunting attire. It works very well in thick, wet, snowy timber. Very quiet and accomodates multiple layers which is a must because it does not keep out the wind, but is very warm even when wet. October 31, 2012
Rated 2 out of 5 by wool jacket I am rather disappointed in my purchase of your monarch valley wool jacket. I bought this to replace my hunting jacket, that I have used for the last ten years. I spend many hours in my tree stand and was looking for a warm jacket to keep out the november cold here in the UP of michigan.I believe if the jacket had an inside liner to block the wind it would be much warmer. Rated 4 out of 5 by Little big Just a little big in size great jacket February 10, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by Monarch Pass Warm, comfortable, roomy where it needs to be, reinforced areas of higher movement, just an all around great jacket. Love the added touch of the shell holders in the pockets. I will say that I have found that Columbia products run big so whatever your regular size is, trust me, go the next size down on outerwear. Rated 5 out of 5 by Monarch Pass Jacket Absolutely love this jacket and the companion pants. The range of weather conditions these garments excel in is far to great to list. I have never been stuck in conditions that had me wishing I had wore something else. I can say without a doubt this is my go to garment for almost all my hunting adventures. I purchased my first Monarch Pass wool jkt and Gallatin Range wool pants about ten years ago and have used them everywhere from the woods of Kentucky to the mountains of Colorado to the Badlands of North Dakota without a complaint. You simply cannot beat the versatility and function of the Columbia Sportswear wool hunting garments. Don't hesitate to pick this product up, you will not regret it! November 29, 2011
Rated 5 out of 5 by perfect but needs mittens to go with These hunting clothes are amazing for hanging out in a deer stand all day with freezing temps. I like the two way zipper, drawstring to keep the wind out, and the elastic sewn into the front pocket to hold your rifle rounds. The only thing missing are the matching hunting mittens with the slit for the trigger finger. November 15, 2011
Rated 4 out of 5 by Love this jacket! My son had a jacket just like this and for 2 years I tried to find it in snow camo in a small. I finally found it recently and was very pleased with the jacket when it arrived. I like the fit and the look of the snow camo. Wool is an awsome fabric for the cold weather. November 5, 2011
Rated 5 out of 5 by wool coat This is the best you can get for winter hunting/hiking etc. The elbows are double thick as well as the matching wool pants have double thick knees. If you've ever layed in snow for a period of time hunting you might realize that wearing 1 leopard print man thong, 1 pair of long johns, 2 pairs of pants, 1 "blizzard proof" coveralls your knees an elbows will still soak through an then youre wet and freezing. This is very warm, quiet gear. PS walk slow, you will work up a sweat in this gear in cold conditions. Hey columbia, could you make matching fingerless wool gloves (so you still have your trigger finger) with attatched mittens in the snow camo pattern? Just an idea, I'd buy'em October 9, 2011
Rated 4 out of 5 by Super HOT Jacket I bought this jacket both as a lifestyle piece and a hunting jacket. The fit is slightly roomy, especially considering that this jacket is HOT and you won;t need to layer too much to stay warm. Looking forward to the weather cooling off so I can use this more.
