Rated 4.1 out of 5 by 82 reviewers.
Rated 4 out of 5 by Large waist, pocket catches Waist size runs a bit large, but not the seat or thigh. There is a design flaw with the inner pocket lining that makes it easy to catch a foot when putting on the shorts, which could lead to a tear. Otherwise comfortable with useful pockets. Strong button, and plenty of belt loops. September 15, 2015
Rated 3 out of 5 by I wish the material was heavier and higher quality! In the past, Columbia shorts were made of a heavier material. Because of that they didn't wrinkle as much and I was able to wear them for for longer before washing them. Unfortunately, all companies have cut back on the amount of cloth they use in shirts and shorts to cut down on production costs. I'm willing to pay more for Columbia shorts but I want the type of heavier and higher quality material used in the past. Also, these shorts should come in more than 3 colors and the Columbia store I went to (Woodfield Mall, Schaumburg, IL) doesn't even carry the 3 colors, so I have to order them on the internet. Since the waist size differs with each pair, I have to order more than I need and return the improperly sized ones to your store. August 29, 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by Love them! I love the length of the 11" inseam version. They work perfectly for me because I'm tall with long legs. Construction and fabric are very good. My only complaint is that I would like to see the snap at the waist replaced by a metal button. I would also like to see more colors offered, especially a light khaki between fossil and flax. August 27, 2015
Rated 3 out of 5 by Nice shorts but run small I have two pair of the ROC II shorts and love them. They are both in a waist size of 30 and fit me well. I usually wear 31 but those fit at size 30. Well I bought the these shorts with a waist size of 30 and they are extremely tight. I thought they may loosen up as I wear them but so far they haven't. They aren't nearly as comfortable as the ROC II shorts. Other than the inconsistent sizing, they look and feel good. August 27, 2015
Rated 2 out of 5 by Inconsistent quality Two out of three pairs that I received have the zippers sewn in incorrectly (the zippers are a bit crooked and show when fully zipped). I will be returning them. July 27, 2015
Rated 2 out of 5 by Really like the shorts but sizing is unpredictable I've owned several pairs of these shorts over the years. Purchased 2 recently. Really like the short but one of the pair (same size) was inches longer and the waist was at least a size larger than the other pair of the same size. Quality control seems to be lacking. July 12, 2015
Rated 4 out of 5 by Nice shorts I've had these pants for a long time and then decided to buy 2 more pairs. Bought 2 same size shorts just different color. One of them came defective it was twice bigger than the other one .I was able to return it to a local outlet store with no problem. Also the color fossil is nothing like one on the picture. It's almost white. Other than that I'm happy with my purchase. July 8, 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by Ultimate ROC Shorts Great shorts! Perfect fit waist size and perfect length. Softer (and smoother) fabric than previous version and resists wrinkles much better. Great for casual wear, especially in warm climates or hot weather. Would definitely buy them again. Need more colors! May 27, 2015
Rated 3 out of 5 by Nice, but not what I wanted. The shorts are good quality, but the zipper pocket is down by the knee instead of behind the regular hip pocket like on many of Columbia's other pants and shorts (the now discontinued Lander model being my favorite). I will be returning these, because anything I would want to put in the zipper pocket would be banging against my knee when moving about. May 1, 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great shorts Excellent completely satisfied April 30, 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by Awesome shorts! These are great shorts! Not too short not too thin. They're heavy duty like dickies but with all the modern technology. They're great at repelling the water, tea, coffee or whatever else I spill that day. The only thing I didn't like was that the pocket can't securely carry a knife. But the lower left pocket carries it fine. I've worn these shorts hiking, rock climbing and to work and they are amazing! April 4, 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by Exactly what he wanted My boyfriend bought a few of these shorts for work and they've lasted over 1 year. So I searched the website and found them. They were shipped in a timely manner. I had an issue with the billing but the customer service was excellent and prompt in getting it fix! I couldn't ask for a better experience overall. Oh, and he loves them! December 4, 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 by ROC Short I like the snap. Pants look good. I had to take them in--I needed a 33. The zipper could be a little longer. November 10, 2014
Rated 3 out of 5 by Great Shorts, One Major Flaw I love the material in these shorts, the fit is excellent and the pockets work well, however there is one major flaw I have found. The Waist Closure snap is very weak, and pops open frequently. These are not tight shorts, they fit well and maybe because they were purchased from the Columbia Outlet store, but all three pairs I have purchased all have snaps that will not stay closed. Beware the snap September 29, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Second Pair I have bought Wore the first pair for 3 years, hiking at least twice a week. Loved them. When I finally wore them out, was happy to buy another. August 31, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Need another pair They fit great just remember they run a little small February 5, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great Shorts I have been buying Columbia shorts for a number of years and never had any problems. I ordered 2 pairs on my first order this time to make sure of fit and was perfect so I ordered 2 more pairs. In about 2 years I will be back for more. They hold up very well for my very active lifestyle. January 31, 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 by Not like the 1st couple pairs ordered Smaller waist than previous (2) pairs purchased .. need (1) size up (34 to a 35 or 36) .. otherwise really like the wear and looks October 7, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Shorts I love the shorts. They were perfect. The shorter length is what was needed. October 7, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by As expected The product was everything I expected it to be. September 17, 2013
Rated 2 out of 5 by Snap Button is horrible! Shorts are great but Columbia for who knows why (unless they think people will repurchase every few months) added a snap button which tears away and falls out of the shorts relatively quickly. Very low quality button and renders everything else good about the short's useless. August 26, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Love the hidden zipper pocket The hidden zipper pocket is a great place for your vehicle's smart key. August 22, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great shorts This is my 3rd pair. I wear them for casual wear as well as fishing. Very comfortable. Side pocket great for pocket knife. August 12, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by this product has great featuer great product,i trying to buy 100% cotton shorts only from colombia ,its just fit me the best way i want it. August 12, 2013
Rated 4 out of 5 by David John These shorts have a nice plain look and the material gives them a less casual look. They seem to run small, and have less room in the leg area. August 11, 2013
Rated 2 out of 5 by I typically (used to) love ROC shorts I am amazed when I find shorts that I like, because I know it is a one time event. Columbia, like others in the apparel industry, change the cut and assembly of their clothing lines each year. I have purchased these same shorts each of the last three years. Although last year's edition was cut totally differently, I still found them somewhat comfortable. This year, I am not certain who they are made for, but it isn't me. I rated the quality average because they appeared to be the quality that I expect from a $40 pair of shorts. As for function, they don't work for me at all. As I get older each year and fight to keep my body in the same shape, it kills me when the clothes that I depend on can't do the same. They don't even offer the shorts with the same inseams from year to year. Crazy! July 29, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Shorts that are long on every good feature Sturdy fabric, powerful reinforcing, fashionable shape, extra deep pockets-these shorts do exactly what I expected: make me look great. July 29, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great Shorts Third pair I have purchased. They are light weight, comfortable and very durable compared to other lightweight shorts. July 13, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by AWESOME SHORTS I'm a creature of habit, so when I find something I like, I stick with it. I found these shorts last year and fell in love with them. I ordered several pair this year and would recommend them to anyone! Quality is fantastic and look is great! July 8, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great style and fit Extremely comfortable , great style. Better choice than denim for hot summer wear. All the pockets you need to make them the ultimate short. July 5, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great everyday shorts I have worn these shorts in several different colors for several yeas now and just bought four new pairs. These are great shorts, They are light weight and very comfortable. I really like the functional pockets and look of these shorts. I highly recommend them. June 30, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Casual shorts do double duty I've been searching for new summer shorts that fit my style (casual), age (60) and have a mix of traditional features (pockets, belt loops) as well as newer features (cargo pockets). These shorts are great looking, fit well and do double duty when something dressy is required. June 26, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Love the fit and comfort I love Columbia clothing not only for the fit and comfort but also for there quality. Since Im an odd size, I have a hard time finding shorts that fit me well in the stores, but I have no trouble finding what I need on Columbia"s web site. June 25, 2013
Rated 4 out of 5 by Functional Shorts But Do Not Match The Original ROC I Have numerous pairs of the original ROC shorts but they are wearing out after several years of hard use. The "New Rock" shorts are functional and they fit as advertised. The problem I have is Colombia went cheaper in several areas. The material is lighter than the original, patch rear pockets (with not closure) instead of the interior pockets and one rear belt loop instead of two. The main problem I have with the new design is the security pocket. It now sits below the right pocket instead of underneath the right pocket as in the original garment. The new design is less accessable and frustrating to use. I have traveled exstensively with the original ROC shorts and pants and found the security pocket very usable and secure. Why did they have to change that feature? June 24, 2013
Rated 4 out of 5 by Versatile and Functional I like the durability and functionality of the ROC shorts, especially the 11 inch inseam length. The zippered pocket keeps money and passport safe. Older versions of the shorts that I still wear had a heavier, more durable material and more belt loops. These are still great shorts, but I miss the prior version. June 2, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great shorts The fit is nice with great length. Very well constructed, excellent in all conditions. May 24, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by JI49 Very good quality and style. Length good but runs a little small in waist April 20, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Columbia is the best Great Pair of shorts for my lifestyle. These are durable for outdoors activities and look good enough to wear out on a date. Cant beat the guarantee either April 3, 2013
Rated 4 out of 5 by New Go-to Shorts! I have been looking for a new go-to pair of shorts for a couple years since North Face discontinued their A5 Utility Shorts. I have finally found them!!! These meet all my requirements: Inseam I'm 5'8", and I don't like my shorts to hang way below my knees. Call me old fashioned, but it's not functional. Also, I wear shorts all the time. Long, baggy shorts just don't look good with a nice dress shirt going out to dinner or on the golf course. Material A lot of hiking shorts are synthetic or nylon material. While these may be okay for a trek or rafting adventure, they aren't so great for everyday casual wear. I like the 100% cotton look and feel. They are canvas, so they are tough and durable, but they feel a lot softer than some other brands' canvas. These go the extra distance with OmniShield. Trust me, wear a pair of shorts golfing a few times above 90 degrees, and you will see them discolored. While I haven't put these through the ringer on the links yet, the fact that they resist stains is great! Pockets Pockets are well placed and sized. The lack of cargo pockets is nice because it allows you to wear them in more upscale locations without standing out. Sure the small specialized phone pocket doesn't fit a smartphone, but big deal. I also read some complaints that the back pockets don't zip. Really? Do your jeans have zipped back pockets? Not necessary. I have 3 pairs in different colors. I also bought one pair of the cargo version. Exactly the same with cargo pockets and a 10" inseam. Still above my knees, and a little more rugged looking because of the cargos. I rated 4 stars just because I haven't had them long enough to determine durability. Hopefully they last a few years. February 21, 2013
Rated 4 out of 5 by Solid all-around value This is the second pair of this type shorts, however, one change was made since my last purchase. The connector at the top of the zipper has been changed from a metal button to a metal clip connector. The only shortcoming to a perfect functionality is that the new connector has a tendency to pop open under some stressful activity. Otherwise, they are a great buy for all-season use. November 24, 2012
Rated 4 out of 5 by Buy These Sure they are just shorts, BUT they are my Favorite pair I own! Semi water proof, very durable, and if you spill, or get blood, or fish slime on them... splash it with water, and they are clean-ish? November 8, 2012
Rated 3 out of 5 by Disappointed in the changes. I have three pair of the previous generation of denim shorts which I really liked but they are worn out so I wanted to replace them. There are many less desireable features in these shorts compared with my old ones: The fabric on these new shorts seems more flimsy or a lighter weight fabric, like something I would find at Target. The finish seems rougher. The zipper (ideal, metal) feels resistant and catchy or rough like it will soon break, even though brand new. The old zipper (YKK, nylon) still functions perfectly and smoothly. The new button looks like a shotgun shell when closed. I like the old one better. I liked the right side security zipper pocket located in same place as regular pocket. The new one has zip pocket down the leg. Too hokey for me. I want my wallet where I can feel it. I miss the velcro pocket closures of the old shorts. Finally the pictures on the website completely got the color wrong. When I received the shorts I was surprised at the color. But I'm too lazy to go to the trouble to exchange them which would probably mean going downtown to the store... October 4, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great short for short legged people Most cargo type shorts are too long. I'm hard to fit with a 29" inseam but this 9" short hits perfectly at the knees. September 26, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by Good looking and comfortable shorts I bought several pairs of shorts this year and these are definitely my favorites. They feel so soft and smooth. Rugged enough for mountain hiking but then still good looking enough for an evening out. Color is a very pleasant dark green. September 23, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by Most comfortable short I have every worn. I live and work in the tropics and these shorts are perfect for everyday wear around the office/docks. August 26, 2012
Rated 3 out of 5 by the snap button? Columbia come on why try to innovate something tried and true like the traditional button. I used to love your pants and shorts but your snap but is horrible. I hike, climb, hunt, fly fish and golf. The snap always comes undone. It gets worse over time. I refuse to buy from Columbia as long as they use this fastener! August 18, 2012
Rated 3 out of 5 by disappointment The fit is not comparable to past Columbia shorts. Slightly larger than I expected; no velcro on the back pockets; and my main complaint is no longer is the 7.5 inseam offered, and because of the side pocket placement they cannot be shortened. August 11, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by As expected Great short, as advertised. Only problem I have is when you step into the short the lower right zippered pocket can catch your toes on the inside. Great short overall and would recommend to others! August 10, 2012
Rated 3 out of 5 by Good - but need improvement I bought two pair of these shorts to replace 2 pairs of their predecessors and, at first, found them really quite nice. However, after wearing them twice (and washing them once) I noticed two things that caused me concern. First - the front clasp button. I thought that the new style button was unique and slim lined. But unless you are wearing a belt (which I prefer not to wear with shorts) they are not very effective. About 80% of the time I sat down or bent over to pick something up - the button pops open. I usually get a bigger size in any pant I buy so that they can shrink to my waist (34). These shorts were quite a bit larger than expected (large 36") and the button is already popping open. They haven't even begun to shrink to my waist size. I am very dissapointed in this and am looking into having them altered/changed with a different option to replace the clasp button. Second - the material. I am not a "thin" person nor am I fat. I am mostly"athletic" with muscular, thick legs. My legs rub together as I walk, so as you can imagine, the material is already starting to become "lint frayed" in the crotch. Other than that they are very nice looking, comfortable, versatile and the pocket space is very ample. In my opinion, they are (obviously)not the same as their predecessors and need a retooling to make them great. August 9, 2012
Rated 4 out of 5 by Good, but ... These are excellent shorts, good quality, nicely constructed, but I have to be honest, I liked the prior version design (AM 4194 - made in Nicaragua) more than this current version (AM 4541 - made in Srilanka). The currently available version lacks several features of the older version which I expected and was disappointed to find missing: Velcro pocket closures, a cell phone pocket, and a double right-side pocket with a zipper on one of them. This later version does have a separate zipper pocket on the lower right side, but it's not as convenient as the double pocket design was. On the plus side, both seem to be made of the same heavy-duty pebble-grained cotton fabric, overall construction is good on both, and the redesigned waist snap fastener above the fly is significantly better. You'll like these, especially if you've never worn the earlier version. July 23, 2012
