Dries very fast and they are very light, but the pockets come inside out a lot while trying to swim. Needs more netting in pockets for water to pass through.

Best buy

I have worn these before and they wear like iron. They are comfortable, functional and all round the best I have ever found. Living in Florida we are presented with all kinds of shorts/swim merchandise. These are by far the best in any category. You can't go wrong buying these.

These are the best shorts

This is the 3rd time I've bought these shorts for my husband, he practically lives in them....they are cool and dry quick......and look good......I only wish they were resistant to bleach as my hubby has ruined 3 pair this way, but he still wears them.

Husbands Favorite Suit... So we bought 3 colors!

I first got these for my husband as a gift. They are very flattering to his build (small, but with somewhat wide hips) and they are a little bit shorter than some of his other swim suits. Sometimes less really is more! He usually wears a size 31 waist in men's pants and the small fits him perfectly. The quality is excellent and the colors haven't faded. The suit is thin, so it drys fast, but it is thick enough to give good "coverage". Husband loves these shorts and I love them on him! We will probably buy a few more, even though we already have 3 colors (black, cypress, and riptide). Oh, I must mention the price - $30?! VERY reasonable price for the style and quality you are getting with these shorts. Makes us want to stock up!

oldies still goodies

My husband has been wearing these shorts for years. They are always the same quality year to year. They are all purpose. Fishing, yard work, shopping, traveling, and anything else you can think of. If traveling they rinse out easily and are dry by morning. They wear well and the color doesn't fade. Highly recommended.

Love Columbia Water Trunks

My 15 year old grandson loves Columbia water trunks. In the spring and summer we purchase them at Bass Pro Shops in Nashville. This is my first time to order them online and I'm very pleased. My grnndson particularly likes the carbon color. I ordered medium this time since he is very slim but still growing and I wanted some growth room. Typical GRAM.

excellent shorts

I've worn earlier version of these shorts for 9 years and extremely impressed how they've lasted. My older pair was size medium so ordered same size again without looking at sizing chart. Of course I needed to exchange for size small which fits fine and matches todays current sizing chart. I've worn these shorts mainly for just knocking around. They're very comfortable and stylish for casual dress. My 9 year old pair have worn like iron and this newer version seems to be same quality with addition of belt loops (superfluous in my opinion) and narrow pliers pocket (also superfluous). I see some reviewers use these shorts as swim wear, where they will function, but I've worn them mainly as comfortable casual everyday shorts. If you're in and out of water a lot these shorts will work great. Reference sizing: I'm 5'9" 148 lbs 31-32 inch waist and worn size med. for entire adult life of 40 years until recently. Now wear size small.

awesome kayaking shorts

Not really a bathing suit

I bought this expecting it to be a bathing suit ("water trunk"). When it arrived, I saw a label on it that suggests it it made to be worn when fishing (or boating, etc.). It has belt loops, another hint that it's not a pair of swimming trunks. Unfortunately, I've gone on vacation and taking this with me as my only swimming trunks, so I'm forced to use it. I like how quickly it dries when I get out of the ocean -- the water beads up on it and falls away, but it's not as snug around my waist as I'd like. It does have an elasticized waistband, but not as strong or as wide as I'd like it. After this vacation, I'll probably just use them as camp or gym shorts and buy another bathing suit.

Great looking and wearing suit--suitable for swimming or working out. Not too long or short. Columbia's sizes seem to run a size larger than most other companies, so if you normally wear a medium, you'll want a small.

Durable, Comfortable, like the pockets

I use these mainly for Swimming. Had one pair for months with no issue - then one swim at LA Fitness La Verne and they completely faded. So ordered two more - since I like these so much - wanted a backup pair. Pocket is handy for keeping locker key secure while swimming laps. These are also great lake shorts also.

Very Good for inactive water activities

The water trunk should be designed by a water sports person. Then, the pockets would drain better and not turn inside-out when entering the water. The pockets should be stitched to keep them where they belong. Now they billow out and look foolish. As a pool fitness instructor, these work only if I don't jump into the pool.

Awesome short

GREAT BUT ONE PROBLEM

The Backcast II Water Trunk is a great product but has one shortcoming. It fits comfortably, is lightweight and dries quickly. But here's the one flaw: the mesh liner is very uncomfortable against the skin when sitting down for extended periods on a hot, sweaty summer day. I hope Columbia reissues this short the same except switches to a crepe liner or any type of liner that doesn't imbed in your skin like this mesh liner.

Not exactly what I expected

These are kind of billed as shorts, but are really a loose fitting bathing suit. I found them to be neither a great pair of shorts nor a likable swimming trunk. Seem to run a little large, dry quickly when you get them wet, the inner mesh portion is not particularly comfortable like in a good bathing suit. The back pocket is way too deep. If you put a wallet in there it is hanging well down on glute and uncomfortable.

Great Water Shorts, but Need Some Modifications...

I'll start by saying these are excellent shorts, perfect for the guy who wants a pair of shorts that double as swim wear. But I made a number of modifications to make them better, some of which address comments in previous reviews. Columbia, suggest you review and update a good design to a great design. First, I removed the belt loops. Who wears a belt with swim wear? They look much cleaner without them. Second, I shortened the rear zippered pocket so my wallet didn't hang so low. Easy fix by folding over the pocket to the desired length and sewing around the edges. Third, I opened up the bottom of the side pliers pocket a bit to provide drainage - the pocket fills up with water and holds it when you get out, a bit irritating and easily fixed. Last, I sewed a lower corner of each front pocket to the leg so they don't turn inside out in the water. Repeating: good shorts now great!

Where's the belt?

Water trunks with belt loops but no water proof belt? Come on. Fortunately my LL Bean Water Shorts came with a belt that I can use. The short seams on the legs are the reason I did not return these trunks. Long seams tend to grab the fly line floating on the surface while dry fly fishing. The LL Bean Water Shorts are too long but look good with a leather belt for casual wear. The color of the LL Bean belt that comes with the shorts doesn't match the Columbia Trunks, but the fish don't care. Incidentally, your description category of Professional Thrill Seeker misses the mark. I am a professional fly fishing outfitter and guide who is in it for the companionship, peace, serenity and the fee.

Water Trunks

My husband loves these shorts! They last forever, the only reason I bought him more is because he's lost weight, he has 4 good pair of mediums but they just got too baggy in the butt, the small is a perfect fit. They repel dirt, and dry quickly. If my husband had his way this would be the only shorts he would wear.

Okay, not as good as original

There used to additional pockets on these shorts (velcro on the front) that are sorely missed. The current pockets are not up to snuff, things fall out much too easily (for instance my money). The accessory pocket is also poorly placed. Please bring back the earlier version!

Great Pair of Shorts

These are great shorts for going to the gym, working out, then relaxing in the pool or steam room. I had a similar pair earlier that I wore all the time. Couldn't find them again until I contacted Columbia, which directed me to this newer version. The new version seems lighter, and dries more quickly. Generally I take an XL (sorry about that) but I ordered the L on this product and the fit is great. I just use the elastic waistband and don't bother with the string.

Weight distribution

Having the accessory pocket on the same side as the back pocket puts an uneven amount of weight on one side of the garment. I would like to carry my cell phone in the side pocket but find it is not comfortable when I have my wallet in the back pocket as well. Also, if the accessory pocket were on the left side I could have access to my cell phone in my vehicle while wearing my seat belt. Still my favorite pair of shorts

Expected more from the Backcast II Water Trunk

Decent swim trunks for standing around at a beach or swimming two laps in a hotel pool. However they are not as hardy and well constructed as I expected them to be. Very light thin material and lining. A very short, thin tie string around the waist. Yes, string is the right word. Both front pockets went in-side-out every time I stand up while swimming in breaking waves. The rear pocket is far too low to carry a wallet in. It is very easy to see where the corners were cut to keep the constuction costs down. I have to take some of the blame, quality swim trunks cost more than these, and I talked my self into believing that these would be a quality short at a $30 price because they were from Columbia. They are not what I expected them to be. I would recommend them to someone with the warnings of their short commings.

Nice Shorts

I have an older pair of Columbia Sportswear shorts I really like. I needed more shorts and couldn't find anything but those stupid long surfer shorts in stores. So, I ordered three pairs of the Backcast shorts directly from Columbia's web site. Overall, I'm happy with the new shorts, though the elastic waistband doesn't have as much covering so it's a little scratchy. Also, while the shorts themselves fit nicely, the interior lining seems to be a little oversized. Neither is a huge issue, but my last Columbia shorts were perfect so these two minor changes stand out. It's just nice to have some decent shorts that don't look silly on an older guy.
