Rated 5 out of 5 by 9outof10mms from Excellent Jacket; Exceptional Value I bought this jacket for a backcountry trip into the Colorado Rockies. Temps were expected to be 30 lo/60 hi. I haven't previously owned a softshell jacket, so this was my first time venturing into this type of gear. I'm always on a strict and tight budget, so this jacket kept popping up in all of my searches for low cost and high quality. The only consistent negative comment I read was about the lining material "snagging" your shirt/base layer. This is EASILY remedied by simply holding onto your sleeves (if it's a long sleeve shirt; this argument is null if you're wearing short sleeves) as you slip the jacket on. Beyond that, I can't find a SINGLE thing wrong with it. The fit was perfect for my frame (6'2" 235lbs). The jacket is light enough to not be noticeable when wearing or carrying it. It 100% blocked steady wind gusts of 15-20 mph and it provided an excellent layer for warmth on its own (with only a t-shirt under it) down to about 45-50 degrees and some slight movement generating heat. Below that, I threw on a long sleeve t-shirt and it kept me perfectly comfortable. It shed a light mist/rain easily without becoming soggy. For heavier rain, I put a rain jacket overtop of it, so I don't know how it performs in a downpour. It even repelled the smell of smoke from a campfire when everything else got saturated! I was most surprised/impressed by that. This jacket is an exceptional value compared to everything else in its category being nearly double the cost. Columbia.com offered a very fair price for fast shipping (I waited 'til the last minute to order). I suspect this jacket will become my everyday when temps start to dip for the fall-spring months (above 45 degrees or so). It shows no signs of wear on the shoulders after backpacking with an overloaded pack!

Rated 5 out of 5 by SuperTall from Great fit for Tall Man My Ascender II in the XL Tall is a wonderful fit for me. I am a lanky 6'8" at 200 pounds. A lot of jackets that are classified as tall always end up being too short in the sleeve. Not so with the Ascender II, the sleeve comes all the way to the base of my thumb even in the elbow bent position. This is one of the best fitting jackets I have ever had!!

Rated 4 out of 5 by TallGuy25 from Great Material Love the overall style and outer material. Very good in wind and rain. Size: Bought XLT although I'm a LT. Sleeve length is super good. Overall fit good. Jacket is a touch short, not an issue. Color is great, NAVY.

Rated 4 out of 5 by rupley3928 from such warmth, much quality this jacket is excellent. perfect thickness, exquisite fit and a great selection of colors. my one and only complaint is regarding the breast pocket, which is far too small to be useful. hats off to Columbia for offering the large tall option unlike the competition.

Rated 5 out of 5 by BecomingALR927 from XLT....Great! My husband is a big guy, 6'8"....we were struggling finding him a coat that fit in the arms and was long enough in the waist without getting bunchy and too big in the midsection. Took a chance on the XLT and it's a great fit. He likes the cut and comfort and because his job requires him to work in professional settings but also push snow, this fits both functions! Was such a great purchase!

Rated 4 out of 5 by SlimforHeight from Arm Sleeeves A Little Tight I really enjoyed the quality of this jacket. The function was good. The fit was good, except I am a slender person for 6'8" at 240lbs. and the sleeves felt a little tight even for me. I cannot imagine that these sleeves would fit an individual who has a heavier bone structure or heavier muscular build in the arms.

Rated 3 out of 5 by StoneSoulPicnic from I'm a big fan, but... I have purchased three Columbia jackets over the years, two fleece and this Men’s Ascender™ II Softshell — Tall about a month ago. The quality is so inconsistent until it's concerning. Both fleece jackets are coming apart at the collar seem (admittedly, one is old but the other is less than a year) and this new jacket, which is a full size larger then I usually get, but stills feels snug and short for a "Big and Tall" size. Maybe you are shifting manufacturers to get a better handle on costs - if that's the case, I get it. But you should never compromise quality. C'mon Columbia! I'll stick with you because there are not many options out there for me in my size, but this is frustrating.

Rated 5 out of 5 by DVBo from Love them We were not sure of size for my son-in-law so we got a Large Tall and an EXLarge tall. The large worked great for him and was beyond what we were thinking we would get. As would have it the XL fit me so we will not be returning one. We both were very happy with the fit and quality of the jackets. The material is very soft and weave is tight and makes the jacket windproof. I will be getting my son one soon for his birthday. Everyone loves the look.

Rated 5 out of 5 by KAB490 from Great Jacket This jacket in a large tall is a perfect fit my 6'3" 195 lb son. He wears a 16 1/2 slim 36/37 dress shirt and the fit of this jacket in LT is spot on. Finding a jacket with sleeves long enough to fit comfortably is always a challenge and this one works.

Rated 4 out of 5 by RW1983 from Ascender II softshell The quality of this jacket is great. True to size and it's easy to see that it is well made. To me the only draw back of this jacket is that the entire inside is fleece. I purchased this jacket to wear with casual business attire and the fleece causes the sleeves of my dress shirts to bunch up when sliding my arms in. Other than that it's great.

Rated 5 out of 5 by AIVH from Great Jacket. Tall sizes are great. I decided to get this jacket for my husband's birthday gift, because he has long arms (36/37 sleeve). It fit him great! Jacket sleeves are always too short for him, and this sleeve is the perfect length. I got him a L Tall. It's a pricey jacket, but also high quality. And, finding a nice jacket that fits him is worth the extra $.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Phuaad from Great multi-purpose jacket! Both the style and quality of this jacket are fantastic! I had read other reviews previously saying that it fits a little small, and that's true, particularly in the sleeves. But I'm very happy with my purchase!

Rated 5 out of 5 by afan2 from A great jacket! This was a gift to my son who is 6'6" so the tall large was a perfect fit. It has been difficult to find the right length and width for him. As he is tall and lanckey, tall, large was perfect. This jacket is better insulated than his old one, so he is looking forward to using it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by EuropeTraveler from Perfect Fall-Winter Jacket I was looking for a lightweight warm jacket for a long time and this is exactly what I was wanting. I tried on a similar North Face jacket that was a large, but it fit horribly so I risked ordering the LT from Columbia and couldn't be happier. I am 6'2 200 pounds and the jacket fit great; fits maybe slightly big, but the length past my waist is perfect and isn't baggy. It is even water repellent which I love. Wore it for an entire day of sightseeing in Nuremberg, Germany while there was a light rain and was perfectly dry when I took the jacket off. Very functionally, not to mention it looks good. Would highly recommend this jacket.

Rated 4 out of 5 by EY612 from Good product, consider sizing up. As others have mentioned, this product runs small. After reading the reviews, I got the impression that it would run a little short in the body, which was OK as most LT's typically run a bit long for me, but it was also tight in the chest. It is noticeably smaller than my LT Columbia fleece. This jacket is designed to be more form fitting, but consider buying a size bigger as it is still outerwear. I exchanged it for an XLT and from there am happy with the product.

Rated 3 out of 5 by WaterMark67 from Ascender II Softshell - Lightweight Jacket for 40+ degrees Purchased this jacket as my previous Columbia Soft Shell was ragged and worn. Pros: This is a versatile jacket for the 40+ degree days. Cons: I find the jacket runs smaller than previously owned Columbia jackets, the sleeves are narrow. forcing you to reach into the sleeve and pull your shirt sleeve down if wearing a long sleeve shirt. Its not overly windproof, as it lacks a storm flap behind the zipper, allowing wind to penetrate the zipper. The white thread stitching for Columbia on the left breast and Omni-Shield on the left cuff is a bit bold, Grey thread would be better suited for a black jacket. In Summary, its a great looking jacket that can be dressed up or dressed down. If it were wind proof, it would be a much better three season jacket. The fit is slim, I'm 6'4", 250lbs and I wear an XL Tall. My forearm is 13" around at my elbow, and the sleeve is snug.

Rated 3 out of 5 by travelnmama from so disappointed- not really a TALL I bought the tusk color LT jacket for my son that is 6'4". He was happy when he saw the color and style. He was so disappointed it is short. It fits him well in the chest and sleeves- but even though I ordered a Tall- it isn't long enough for a 27 year old guy that wants a nice soft shell to wear out during the winter. Back it goes.

Rated 2 out of 5 by Ian58 from Fit has changed - for the worse I loved my old Ascender softshell and have used it everywhere - on the Coast to Coast, down the pub, day trips in France and Italy. The new one seems a very different shape: much tighter in the arms and shoulders, the arms much longer, and the inner fabric binds badly on whatever shirt I am wearing under it. All in all it makes it very difficult to get the jacket on, and the arms are often twisted and uncomfortable. Such a shame.

Rated 3 out of 5 by cucumberpickles from Pretty good, not the best First off, I'm giving a 3 out of 5 because of what I assume is either a manufacturing or design defect, as described below. Otherwise, the shell is pretty good. PROS Length and sleeves are perfect for me. I'm 6'3 and change, 190-195 lbs, slightly longer than average torso. Sleeve length and shell length is great. The chest area, shoulder area, and sleeves are well fitted. However, the lower torso area is a bit baggy/boxy. I didn't expect it to be slim fit, but I wish it was slightly more fitted. Otherwise, it's sized well for taller people. Material-wise, it lives up to expectations. Wind and water resistant, warm, seems well constructed as of now. I purchased the shell in Surplus Green. The color is different than what is shown on the website. It is not as dark as shown on this website. Luckily for me, I prefer the actual, lighter/brighter green. Check amazon for a more accurate picture of the color. CONS I have at least a dozen articles of clothings/shoes/jackets from Columbia so I have relatively high expectation of their product. So, if it seems like I'm being nit-picky, it's not because I'm being a jerk but because I am a big fan of their products. I think there are at least 2 major flaws with this shell. First, the sleeves are adjustable with velcro straps. The velcro straps are tapered at the end with the velcro ending about 1/2 an inch from the ends. Since the straps don't completely attach to the velcro, the edge of the strap sticks up and constantly gets caught on things and unattaches. This design seems to be only on the softshell. I have a raincoat, fleece, and other outerwear that have squared edges that never have had this problem. The second problem is at the front of the collar, where the zipper is located when you completely zip up the jacket. The right collar has an extra flap (likely to reinforce the area where the zipper is) that I believe is either likely a manufacturing defect (possibly a design defect). The flap on my shell is not completely sewn to the shell itself so there is a 6 inch flap of material running parallel to the right zipper keeps inverting and flipping out. So, when the flap is in its proper place, the flap is in the inside of the jacket. However, since the flap is not sewn at all to the jacket, it constantly flips out from the inside of the jacket preventing me from zipping up my jacket. Yea, I know, first world problems, but it is very annoying and unsightly. As a result, I think my shell deserves a 3 out of 5. If my shell did not have the flap issue, and in consideration of the boxy lower torso area and sleeves, I would have given it a 4 out of 5.

Rated 5 out of 5 by NateB from Simply amazing - a "guy" review This coat/jacket is simply amazing. The fit is perfect on the LT for a taller guy that is not very large. This is for the guy that wants a nice jacket that "fits" right, great quality and still gives a slender look. I always have an issue (all tall guys have experienced) where the jacket is long enough but to big/bulky because they it was both BIG and TALL. The LT size gets the tall fit PERFECT - but leaves a lot of the unnecessary BIG out of the equation. This is my most highly recommended jacket - I spent many hours finding the right one.

Rated 3 out of 5 by JEANS1976 from JACKET RUNS SMALL I BOUGHT A 4XLT JACKET BECAUSE I'M 6'5 AND 340 LBS. THE JACKET FIT AROUND MY SHOULDERS AND MID SECTION FINE, BUT WAS REALLY SHORT FOR BEING A "TALL" WAS A LITTLE DISAPPOINTED IN THE LENGTH, BUT WOULD HAVE GOTTEN THE NEXT SIZE UP IF AVAILABLE, BUT THEY STOP AT THE 4XLT. I ENDED UP RETURNING THE JACKET BECAUSE THAT WAS A LOT OF MONEY TO NOT BE COMPLETELY SATISFIED WITH THE PRODUCT.

Rated 3 out of 5 by steelguitars from Nice jacket but very short I bought this jacket a few days ago after spending some time looking for a softshell jacket that would fit as i have a long torso. When I ordered the jacket I bought a size larger and I ordered the tall version, when the jacket arrived I tried it on and was very disappointed to see how short it was. I had looked at similar jackets in other brands that were not available with a "tall" distinction and this jacket seems to fit about the same. I have several columbia button up shirts and several inches hang out below the jacket which is a size larger. I am seriously disappointed, I will most likely be returning this jacket. On the plus side it has great construction, is very warm and has several roomy pockets for storage. It would be the perfect jacket for cold fall days or light winter days in north Texas.

The website had two different shades between regular and tall. We really liked the sample jacket we had purchased so I contacted customer service and Linda helped me. She assured me that all of our jackets would be identical in color and was great to work with. Our jackets arrived and all 24 are IDENTICAL in color and the quality is great. We would definitely buy from them again.

Rated 1 out of 5 by Dean2 from Under Sized and Miss Proportioned I've worn Columbia jackets for over twenty years. They no longer make my favorite Falmouth jacket so I decided to try the Ascender II as it appeared to be "similar" in purpose to my old Falmouth. It is way too small and the sleeves on my "tall" XL are way too short. I also don't care for the material and general look of the Ascender II. I will be returning the jacket. I don't know what else to buy from Columbia so I will begin searching out other clothing lines until they bring back something similar to the Falmouth.

Rated 4 out of 5 by Ken1992 from Best Jacket I've Ever Owned, Bar-None. As a 6'4", 195 lb lanky giant, I have trouble finding clothes that fit. This jacket came pretty close. I bought the large tall. The sleeves and length were just right to fit my stretched frame, while the chest wasn't TOO baggy, just a little more room than i'd like. The jacket keeps you comfortably warm in a huge range of temperatures, something I find to be incredible. I wore this jacket running in the cold of a Pennsylvania winter in the single digits of temperature not to mention the wind, and on chilly Texas nights at 45 degrees. Blocks wind, wicks away moisture, and looks great while doing it all. I could not recommend this jacket enough. It has literally made me a lifetime customer of Columbia.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Red1 from This product has the length we were looking for. Love the style, fit and length of this Columbia XL Tall jacket. My son who is 21 is tall and it is very difficult to find stylish things in his size. I was hoping to find a selection of Tall sized jackets at the Columbia Outlet store in our area, but no luck (as usual) So I chose a few styles I liked & went to the website & ordered 1 in XL Tall from the styles we chose at the store. Really have to go to the extra lengths (unexpected pun) to find things in his size. Plus because I had to buy online at Columbia instead of the outlet store I had to pay 2x the amount of the jackets at the outlet to get what I wanted.
