Best boot for Chicago winters
Great all around boot. if you want something that keeps your feet warm and i mean warm get these XTM Model. rated for - 65 degree weather and i believe it with a good wool sock might be rated for -80. The traction is awesome. please note below -35 the rubber starts to get less pliable which causes some traction loss but still great winter boot. Waterproof tech seems good haven't submerged my foot in cold water but about up to about 3-4 inches and was fine and dry. Hope this helps anyone. Have a nice day

Good boot- tends to fit a bit narrow.
I normally don't have to get shoes in a wide. These boots are a high quality boot but are very narrow at the ball - pinkie toe area. After receiving them i called customer service to see if wide option was available. It's not. What i ended up doing was wearing around the house and heating up the tight area with a hair dryer. That seems to loosen them up a bit. But they get tight again when cooled. Hopefully the insulation will pack down in the tight area as i intend to keep wearing them.

Wanted to love it, but there are real problems
Warm. These boots are very, very warm. I work in freezers at my job that are held at -12degrees F, and my feet don’t feel a thing in these. The waterproofing was a great feature! Maybe my boots in particular got excluded from that part of construction, though, because when the water gets higher than two inches it floods in my boots. That....shouldn’t happen with ‘waterproof’ boots that go several inches past my ankles. I don’t know where or why they leak but ther reviews have complained about it too. Don’t buy if waterproofness is what you need.

Don't get the negative reviews my are outstanding
Needed to replace a pair of Merrill winter boots that I loved and these exceeded expectations.
I live in the North East and although we don't get the amount of snow other parts get you still need a pair that can hold up. These perform and are good looking, tons of compliments and feet feel comfortable and dry, grip is the best part in my opinion. I kinda wish I could wear them year round. We get too warm for that hahahah! Great product.

Good replacement
Replaced my old Bugaboo boots that were falling apart with these. The Michelin tread is great. The taller boot took a little bit of time to get use to, but is fine now. The boot is actually easier to put on than the Bugaboo. Wish they offered a wider width, but these are OK for my wide feet.

Love it
I bought it for the snow. I live in Bosron Massachusetts and we get a nice amount of snow in the winter. These boots gripped the ice like i was on asphalt as i prepped for a balancing act to keep balance that there was no need for, qlol.
Very warm and dry as well, my feet start to sweat in the house if i dont take them off right away upon entry.

The boots are met with the extremely cold weather
I have received the boots and tried them on. They fit very well. They look stylish. I can wear to work or for outdoor activities.
The best feature is Rated -65F/-54C which I need because the weather hits -42C here in Mongolia.
Overall, I really love them.

Another excellent boot!
Similar to my last review of the Bugaboot Plus IV Omni-Heat (which see), these excellent boots replaced an older pair of Columbia Icefield winter boots. While the Bugaboot Plus IV are rated to -25C, these XTM bad boys are good down to -65C due to 600g of insulation. They are a tad taller than the Plus IV but are similar in just about every other respect. I've had them out snowshoeing twice now, and they are easily the equal of the old Icefields. Warm, comfortable and capable is how I would describe them. They fit the snowshoe bindings well and feel like part of the whole assembly, which is important on a long trek. I'm glad I bought these boots, and I'm even happier that I now have 2 pairs of them to choose from! Highly recommended! PK (This review was collected as part of a promotion.)

Nice warm boot
The boots are warm and comfortable for shoveling snow and walking in the snow. The only complaint is how difficult they are to get on and off. The laces can be difficult to loosen.

Happy husband
My husband loves these boots! Our temps are often below zero and he says his feet stay nice and warm. He likes that he doesn't slip and slide as we live on a hill and he doesn't loose his balance when he is using the snowblower. He also likes the fact that they are waterproof. It was a great Valentines present.

Review of Columbia Bugaboot Plus IV XTM Omni-Heat

Size: 15
My shoe size: 12.5-13m
Regular price: $145
Waterproof: Yes
Height: ~1' (20cm / almost 8" inside)
Weight: ~5 lbs.
The Bottom Line: 3
I saved a lot of money going with Columbia, but I ended up going through a lot of hassle that shouldn't have happened and that really tarnished the experience for me. The boots keep my feet warm and dry, but I have to step somewhat carefully if there's ice. I'm considering returning the boots because of the problem with the boot squishing my foot on the top.
Ordering: 2
I ordered the boots, and mittens (for my daughter), from the Columbia website https://www.columbia.com. Lots of boots were on sale and, with the help of some shopping apps, I got another discount, so I ended up paying less than 50% of the MSRP. Because I signed up to be a member, I also got free shipping! Unfortunately, during payment I hit a glitch. The website locked my money on PayPal then claimed I didn't have enough money (but I did), nor would it release that money after I paid with my card. 3 days later, my money was still tied up in this pending authorization. It took 9 days, total, and several calls to both PayPal and Columbia. More on that after the log. It was frustrating!
Shipping: 4
The boots arrived on the day the website told me I'd get them, in a thick plastic shipping bag that now lines a garbage bin. Inside, the boots were in a Columbia box, in mint condition. The mittens came 2 days later in another bag (I was told this was because they shipped from a different warehouse).
Comfort & Sizing: 1
These boots are a bit more comfortable than the old boots I was wearing (not good), but taller with a decent lacing system. I found other brands at the store that were very comfy inside (I'll put notes about those brands and how accurate their sizing is at the bottom of this article), an important factor for me because I have problems with plantar fasciitis. When I tried on size 13s, they were a tight fit even though Columbia's website claims that they are true to size and I wear 12.5-13. Since the insoles were hard and not designed to properly support a foot, I knew I'd need a larger size to accommodate the inserts I use, too, which is why I ordered 15s. It's fairly easy to sinch the top of the boot tight with this lacing system but if you want a one-pull-all-tight system, this isn't it. My biggest problem with them is that they fold at the base of the lacing system, all the way across the front of the boot when I step, putting unpleasant pressure on the flesh and bones above the ball of my foot and my little toe. I have to take smaller steps to minimize this problem and, since this isn't leather, the problem is unlikely to go away. If you need inserts, these boots are not the choice for you. Do NOT order these without trying them on at a store first!
Slippage: 3
The boots' "anti-slip" rubber doesn't slip as readily as my old boots, but they do slip, especially if the treads are full of snow. The treads may be Michelin technology but can't walk with impunity; you'll still need to step carefully on ice.
Warmth: 4
The boots keep your feet warm and, if you're active enough, your feet will warm up over time. If you put them on when they're cold, then stand outside and expect your feet to warm up when they've become cold because of the boots, you're going to be disappointed though because these boots don't have heaters. You'll need to get moving to heat yourself up and get more warmth down there.
Dryness: 5
I tend to sweat more than the average bear so, while I had to open my coat, pull my snowpants down to my waist and take off my neckwarmer, my feet didn't get sweaty even when I was overheating.
The waterproofing on this boot is indisputable - I tested it repeatedly in deep snow, slush, ice and water, and nothing penetrated. If you live where the snow is often higher than a foot and your snowpants aren't good at sealing the gap, you might want taller boots than these.
Durability: 5
The boots seem rather durable and, so far, the treads show no sign of usage. I used the heels to bang against ice on the sidewalks and they held up well. The parts are either stitched or glued together, and it seems well-constructed. I'm not sure whether the lacing system will tear up the laces or not.
Appearance: 3
These are utilitarian in appearance; rugged and stern. The color varieties are limited: brown and black, grey and black, or black. Oh, and the laces have a bit of color depending on which you get. The insides also sport the same color as is on the laces (respectively: red, grey or blue), as well as the silver dots of the omni-heat reflective material, both of which peek out the top.
Customer Service: 1
We're not supposed to mention it.
Log of Usage:
Feb. 13: Right after I got these boots, I put them on and used them for a few hours, but I was usually inside. I had deliberately ordered 15s because I'd tried some Bugaboot III size 13s at a store and they were too tight and small. I then took them into the deep snow to play with my son for 30 minutes. Aside from when the snow was deeper than the top of the boots, my feet and lower shins stayed dry. When I put them on, they were cool inside because my apartment is set to 65 F but, as we played, my feet warmed up and stayed warm no matter what I did. This was in sharp contrast to my old boots that leak from the sides and bottoms (they're old and 2nd-hand) and become cold within minutes of setting out in sub-32 F (0 C) weather. If I tried to slide along ice, I could but the boots quickly halted the slide. I had no trouble with my feet becoming wet despite all the snow and my feet didn't even sweat. The only things that displeased me are the sizing, and that the insole is very firm.
Feb. 14: I took my boots for a walk 2.4 miles today in above freezing (30s F) weather. Walking through snow, slush and puddles didn't affect me at all, and the boots slid just a small amount if I walked on slick ice - not enough to cause me to fall, unlike those old boots! I noticed that I could feel some pressure as I walked, running above the ball of my right foot and hitting my pinky toe with every step, although it wasn't enough to cause pain or serious discomfort.
Feb. 15: I inserted double insoles (gel & Dr. Scholl's plantar fasciitis) and took my boots for a spin today in 19 F and windy weather with ice on the sidewalk. My feet never had a problem, although I swiped them repeatedly through puddles, cracked ice with the heels and walked on snow, cement and ice. My feet stayed dry and warm. Most of the time, if I didn't try to slide, I didn't. However, I DID slide by accident when I was trying to get around a garbage bin blocking most of the sidewalk, and also when I hit a slight incline. In addition, the pressure on my right foot was much stronger because of the low ceiling, impinging on my little toe and the top of my foot as when I step the boot folds sharply just at the base of the laces area, which is definitely not good.
2/17: My old boots always failed to be comfortable, pinched my foot at the balls when I stepped, and quickly grew cold in the winter (and had holes I couldn't seal despite the liberal applications of Shoe Goo), so taking my son to play in the park would lead to frozen toes. I put on my chilly (~65 F) Bugaboots and went with him for about 3 hours in weather in the teens and twenties Fahrenheit. Although we walked under a mile, trudging through deep snow on occasion, my feet never got cold, but never fully warmed up, either. When I hit snow over ice, I would slip. I alternated between watching my son and sledding, and we trudged to the fort we'd built in the woods backing the park, too. My feet never fully warmed up like they had the first time, but they were warmer than when I'd put the boots on. They never got wet, except when the snow was too high (at least 14"), which was often, so I had to trudge straight-legged to keep the snow from getting between my snowpants and boots. Another trudge home later and my toes were still chilled but dry. I didn't sweat much in the boots. The right boot kept folding at the ball.
2/18: An all-day snowfall occurred, adding at least 6" to the snow blanketing the ground. I had chores to run so I put on my chilly boots and walked through the falling snow (snowpants, winter coat with hood, neck warmer, hat, as usual). I walked about 3.5 miles, in and out of buildings, through deep snow. My feet stayed warm and dry. The right boot folded on my foot.
2/19: It was above freezing and I sat indoors in my boots for a few minutes to allow them to warm up more. I walked over a mile each way, being inside for about 30 minutes, through deep snow, slush and water. As always, the right boot folded on my foot. My feet stayed warm and dry.
Fitting Experience:
I stopped at a couple of stores to check on boot sizing since there isn't a standard that all companies follow. Supposedly, Columbia is true to size but years of experience has taught me never buy footwear without trying them first. Because it's February, the selection wasn't optimal, and I didn't see most of the recommended brands. I wear 12.5-13 m (standard width) so I tried on size 13 only (half sizes are not available for many brands). Most brands were a bit small.

Best Designed Boot Ever
I have always liked the fit of a Bugaboot, these are very nice. Most comfortable pair of hiking boots I have. I call these hiking shoes because of the way they perform when walking on uneven ground. They don't have the quick off shoe lugs at top of boots, but you really don't need them, the laces slide easily, it is very quick to open top of boot and slip in and out of them.I ordered a half size bigger then what I normally wear and they fit perfectly. I am very impressed by these boots. I have not tested them walking in deep water, but they perform nicely in snow.

Well this is the very first pair of boots I got from Columbia and I am very impressed with them, I love the style and design and they are very comfortable, they fit me perfectly and since I work out doors my feet or toes does not get cold. I definitely will buy these kind of boots in the future, you get what you pay for and to me it’s worth every penny. Thanks Columbia.

Great boot. Warm and comfortable.
This boot certainly gets the job done especially for the price. Only concern is a crease that forms from walking - I feel that it might wear down over time and eventually break. Inside of foot on the big toe where you would expect it to flex most. Overall still worth the buy in my opinion.

Its still good item but it needs to polish some details..
Its a nice design specially the tire rubber michellin and i try it unto huge black ice and i never slip,
The thing is it need to make some adjustment on boots,
Last weekend when we hit the extreme weather alert i feel cold inside my feet specially on bottom so i need to put 1 more thick socks or buy a doctor scholls pad so i can feel warm on bottom.
Overall review i still like the boots (This review was collected as part of a promotion.)

Perfect for everyday winter walking
So I’ve had these for a few days now and I love them. I use them to just walk around town and while driving around delivering pizzas on the weekends. They are not cumbersome at all. No break in needed. I went a whole size bigger and they fit me just fine with a pair of winter socks. They are very warm too.

This is about fit
I just received my boots and wore them for a day or so. I ordered one half size bigger than I wear in hiking boots and they are the perfect size for one pair of heavy hiking socks and another pair of heavy normal socks. You need high socks with these boots but not as high as ski socks. I like to do a runner's knot when I tie my boots and the lace is too short to do this so I just skipped the top hole on the boot and it was fine. They didn't need breaking in and were comfortable right out of the box. I love the fact that the two boots are closer to two to three pounds rather than six pounds.

Was happy until I tested the waterproofing.
I'm curious what 'waterproof' means when it comes to these boots, because it feels like there's a hole cut in both boots right above the toes. I have a pair of Canuk Extremes beside me because of the other review on these Bugaboots, but the tongue is something like 4 inches shorter than the bugaboot and I was hoping for waterproofing above my ankle.
This is pretty disappointing considering I've tested a dozen other boots and these were leading in everything from comfort to ease of taking on and off, but they didn't stop water for 5 seconds. If your feet are constantly wet nothing else really matters.

A leaker
I work in streams for a living, all year round. I bought these boots because they were a taller boot, so I wouldn’t have to change into hip waders so often. A bonus was the 600gram insulation. Looked good, tall enough, really warm and cozy. Unfortunately as soon as I walked into the stream they leaked almost immediately, BOTH BOOTS. I have been a Columbia diehard for a while, 1st time I was disappointed except for fit. So I went back to the well again and bought the new extreme Canuk, no problems now. Could be I just got a bad pair, oh well my feet are dry now.
