Men’s Barlow Pass 550 TurboDown™ Jacket is rated out of 5 by 52.
Rated 5 out of 5 by kb87 from Great coat I've worn this coat for about a week now and I've put it through a variety of conditions; rain, snow, -5C with windchill, and while bushwhacking. The coat is completely water and wind proof, water drops bead on the surface and can be brushed off easily and you can't feel the wind at all. The thermal reflective material on the inside does exactly as it advertises, reflecting your body heat back to your body very well. The drawstring around the waist works well to tighten the coat to your body without causing the bottom half to flare out. I agree with other reviews that a drawstring or maybe ribbed cuff on the bottom would be nice but I haven't experienced much heat loss without one. I was doing some trail work and the coat was scratched by many tree branches, one poked me hard enough that on my bare skin it would have easily cut and bruised me and the coat shows no signs of damage whatsoever. I was concerned about the way the faux fur is attached and did feel air passing through the spaces in between the buttons but I figured out an easy fix to this problem: If you attach the fur from under the hood so that the buttons are facing up, it will tuck into the hood and end up creating a kind of seal around your face. See the pictures for reference. As for the size, I'm 6'1" and slim so it's difficult to gauge sizes online. The medium fits well length wise but it's not snug only due to my slim size. I gave the function 4/5 only because your left-right head movement is a little limited when you have the hood up. This is probably normal and may improve once I've broken the coat in and worn it more. Overall, I'm really happy with my purchase and feel confident that this coat will let me work outdoors comfortably in all winter conditions. (This review was collected as part of a promotion.)

Rated 4 out of 5 by Sully19 from MEN’S BARLOW PASS 550 TURBODOWN™ JACKET Turbodown was everything I hoped for. Great quality of material, super comfortable, and extremely warm. If you have a 3 in 1 coat go possibly one size down from that as this product does truly fit a little bigger. Great buy and well worth it, obviously this is a popular coat with how fast they are sold so get yours while you can.

Rated 5 out of 5 by LucasToronto from Perfect for Torontonian Winter I recently purchased this jacket and I can say that this was the best acquisition I had to the winter in Toronto. It is more than enough for mostly of the cold days ( only in few situations I had to complement with a sweater). My only concern is the size, since small looks like medium. I strongly recommend this jacket. (This review was collected as part of a promotion.)

Rated 5 out of 5 by Walt20 from Fantastic coat I have had many winter coats but this one is the best so far. Firstly, it has plenty of well-placed pockets (something sorely missed in other coats). It is extremely warm and repels the wind brilliantly. The higher neck line is great for keeping the neck warm and the hood keeps my head very warm. The only things that I would change/add are (1) another internal pocket - there is only one small zippered pocket and (2) the draw strings on the inside to make the wait smaller. These strings always get caught in the zipper when I zip up the coat. They should be shorter. However, these are not deal-breakers and I am really, really happy with my coat.

Rated 4 out of 5 by LETSG0WVU from Very Nice Parka So I needed a jacket for the bitter cold we've been having this winter as my current lineup just wasn't heavy duty enough. My aim was to use this parka in temps below 20 F. I've tested it out a few times now: Pros: Nice quality and finish, green color is very nice, collar style is superior to others I've seen (independent of the hood), hood is functional and warm, cuffs are nice and seal well, overall comfort is great, tons of pockets, zipper works well both ways, longer cut covers your back side nicely, overall great look and feel. Cons: No fleece in hand warmer pockets, waist drawstring is way too long and gets in the way, not quite as warm as I was anticipating although it does the job once you start moving around, insulation fill weight probably should be higher for such a large jacket. Overall: This is a super nice parka/jacket. I've yet to really test out the water repellency but am pleased overall. I'd give 5 stars if the added warmth was there although my goal was to wear just basic clothes under the jacket without insane layers; I'm sure if you had a decent fleece layer under it you'd be good to go. I bought 2 jackets of the same style and the other was another brand, that one definitely seemed warmer but this Columbia had a nicer look, feel and comfort level. I'm 6 ft and 205 lbs and the large fits perfectly with a little room to spare for some layers.

Rated 4 out of 5 by Astrogeek from Almost perfect parka This parka is roomy in the chest area. It has a drawstring to cinch the chest area of the parka. The omni-heat insulation works great! It's the best feature of the jacket. You will be warm if you wear it. This jacket will easily get you to zero degrees Fahrenheit. My cons are 2: 1. I bought an extra large. The chest area is too big and that drawstring is too long. 2. This parka needs an elastic drawstring for the bottom of the parka. That was my biggest gripe. Due to the design of the parka, a good gust of cold air will rob you of body heat in the lower part of your body. When you cinch the chest drawstring the bottom flares outward.

Rated 5 out of 5 by MichaelW from Best winter jacket I’ve ever owned! Toasty warm, comfortable, water repellant and great pockets. The inner cords that can be used to synch the jacket are slightly annoying because they get in the way of the zipper, but other than that this is a wonderful, nearly perfect jacket!

Rated 5 out of 5 by TriathletePerry from Great sub-zero coat I live in Chicago and was expecting a brutally cold winter this year so I bought this coat. I also wanted a coat that would last me forever so I was willing to pay top dollar for the right one (I got this one at a fantastic sale price too). Right after it arrived, the weather turned to sub-zero temps and has stayed that way for the last 3 weeks. This coat has kept me extremely warm whenever I go outside. I was concerned that I would sweat and get too warm if I wore it inside or while I was in the car, but it actually did very well. I think the inner lining maintains body temps very well. I’m 5’11” and weight 205 and the medium fit me perfectly with room for a sweater underneath.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Happy5 from Barlow Pass 550 turbo down Husbands comments: Great looking jacket. Love most everything about it. 2 comments: pockets aren’t very warm if I don’t have gloves and don’t care for the inner drawcord hardwear. It seems cheap for this nice jacket. Prefer a toggle like MHW.

Rated 4 out of 5 by jigarius from Awesome Jacket I love in Montréal and the temperature here gets quite low in the winter (-25°C). So far the jacket looks good and it has held it's own even at -12°C with only a t-shirt below, so I'm very happy. I got one size bigger on purpose just in case I need to put on a sweater underneath. Sometimes cold might seem to enter from the bottom of the jacket. When this happens, make sure you have tightened the waist cord nicely. You might want to use a scarf to stop cold from entering from around the neck. Though I love this jacket very much, I think certain things could have been improved here and there, but overall the jacket is very nice. (This review was collected as part of a promotion.)

Rated 4 out of 5 by Agent1619281 from BLACK is ...TORNADO? While the jacket itself seems well made, the pictures here of the BLACK version (Style: 1619281) do NOT accurately reflect the product sold. The outer shell is not BLACK so much as it is SMOKE. The button snaps and exposed zippers in the pictures online appear brass-like but the real product's snaps and zippers are a dull, standard grey metal. The picture here shows the Columbia logo on the torso and left-hand sleeve as a subtle black, but the real product's logo mirrors how it looks on the Collegiate Navy (Blue) style: obvious leather. Ironically, the faux fur's silver color (the one feature I feared would look different in person) is unchanged from the image online. Attached to this review is an unfortunately compressed photo of the different color scheme. It was interesting to see that while my order and invoice list this style as "BLACK," my return label reads "TORNADO." Make of that what you will.

Rated 4 out of 5 by JimBobZ from Warm, dry and light! I bought this coat to replace an old one from another major maker which finally was showing too much wear to carry on after 20 years. This coat provides the warmth abd coverage I need at 1/2 the weight. It is a bit roomy for a medium but that provides space for layers and movement. Sheds water completely. Haven't had a chance to test it in extreme cold yet. A great buy from Columbia!

Rated 5 out of 5 by Oldone from excellent It replaces an ancient parka of another brand bought back in late '80's. it is less bulky, warmer and waterproof which is what I needed. My old one was warm but would soak up the water. This one won't. I really like the Columbia brand and this parka's quality is exceptionally fine. It feels like it will stand the test of time as well.

Rated 3 out of 5 by TylerJayy from A lightweight water proof parka a long light weight parka that runs very large on the cuffs and neck area, I purchased a medium at 6'1" and 160 and had the sizing issues previously mentioned. The coat itself was purchased on the exclusive sale for 140, and at that price is worth the money. I own several other Columbia parkas and this coat has the least durable of fabrics. The hood is also very large and loose( partially due to fabric quality) and the fur trim is not on par with other Columbia parkas. The waist draw string is attached by two separate simple plastic pieces that are not the standard pinch clips on most Columbia ware. Wth that said, this coat does well in temps 20-40; the amount of pockets make it versatile enough for light backpacking and adventuring, however the fabric is something that I would be careful taking into abrasive environments.

Rated 3 out of 5 by Coldhead from Very Poor Hood Lets start with the positives. Light weight comfortable and free moving coat. Great protection from the cold, rain, snow etc to the body. Size runs a little too large. A snug fit would make this garment look better. I have the waist cord drawn to pull it in but it creases the coat too much. The major down fall to this parka is the hood. When pulled over the head It falls over your eyes even when the strap is adjusted fully. This is a joke. Also the hood doesn't fit close to the face which allows the elements to hit your face. I expected more from Columbia with this. I can not use my hood as i would be at risk of walking into trees or off mountains . A real shame as this parka would be awesome if the hood was better designed.

Rated 4 out of 5 by Albie from Great parka - just runs very large The quality of the parka is awesome. It felt very warm. However, it runs about a size or two bigger. I wear a medium in all my coats, but this medium was huge on me. I'd recommend going with a size smaller. Unfortunately, had to return the coat.

Rated 5 out of 5 by sptimmy from Great Coat! The 'Black' color is not the pictured black. It is more of a dark grey color. I wanted a true black, but I thought the color was still dark enough that I liked it. Other than that, it is a very warm coat. I live in Mn, and it was -30 this past week. I barely noticed wearing this coat.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Nick11 from Best Winter Jacket for Chicago Weather This jacket is a life saver!! It blocks the high winds, keeps me warm and dry with out any issues. The pocket space and the adjustable hood and sleeves make it easy if you have more or less layers on underneath. I work in the auto industry and always am running from inside at my desk to out on the lot for some periods of time. Either showing cars or even in the snow storms cleaning off and moving our inventory of 400+ cars/trucks. I also go to a lot of out door sporting events in the Chicago area, this past weekend we had the coldest game to be played at Soldier Field in modern Bears history. There was not one point during the 8 hours plus outside in the negative temperatures that I was cold.

Rated 5 out of 5 by DustinM from Everything I was looking for This is an excellent coat, hands down. I was searching for a coat that would withstand Chicago winters and this has all the functionality to do just that and all at a reasonable price. The Omni Heat reflective material takes a minute to get used to because it looks unlike any other coat but that will be the last thing on your mind while you're staying toasty. A couple things really made this coat for me that seemed to be lacking on other, more pricier coats. 1. POCKETS! Why would you design a winter coat without pockets in a sensible place?? I don't want to be walking around like I'm doing the chicken dance. This has double entry pockets at the hip and are fleece lined, they're not messing around. 2. Sleeve Cuffs. Seems like a no-brainer, but still so many coats are missing this essential feature to keep the cold and snow out. 3. Water proof. This coat does not get all soggy after being out in the snow for long periods of time. It stays dry like, just like my scalp in the winter. 4. Good Zipper. The last thing you want to do in a blizzard is be fishing around for that tiny zipper with your gloves on. No problem here. There's a long leather tie that's easy to grab with bulky gloves on. The dual zipper comes in handy too when you sit down and your coat bunches up. This zipper won't stick and the dual zipper won't give you problems when trying to get the zipper into place. So all-in-all this coat is a great buy for the price. It is durable and long and looks great too. I'm 5'11 and about 160 lbs. The small fits well and with enough room to zip the fleece lined collar all the way up without choking me.

Rated 5 out of 5 by franzcatch from Just what I was looking for Have been looking for the right parka for some time that doesn't break the bank (I got this one on sale for around $115), but works really well for cold temperatures. Finally found it in this jacket. At regular price ($280) this jacket was comparable to North Face or other similar jackets in that price range for the features it provides. I really like that the fur on the hood is detachable - making cleaning much easier without having to worry about ruining the fur. The jacket is more than enough to keep me warm in cold temperatures, looks great, and fits me really well. One thing I didn't like in the picture (that turned out to be fine once I tried it on) was how the wrist cuffs protrude out of the sleeves. However, upon trying it on, the sleeve falls down over top of the wrist cuffs. This is great because they are not visible, but you still get the added protection to prevent the wind/snow from blowing up into your sleeve. I typically wear a Large-Tall and this works perfectly for me. I was a bit concerned that the thermal-reflective lining would be really uncomfortable, but it doesn't bother me at all. Overall the jacket is very comfortable. If I had one complaint, I wish the hood was more adjustable. There is a strap behind the head which allows you to pull the hood higher or lower over your face. But it is missing a drawstring to wrap the front of the hood tighter around the face. For me, this is a pretty minor thing but worth mentioning. I bought the "black" color. Which is really more like a smokey black or a grayish black. I really like the look. Great jacket!

Rated 1 out of 5 by Boblite from Nice but the neck was much much too loose Overall nicely made but there was much too much slack around the neck and no means of adjusting for a tight fit. Would take a very large scarf to make it fit. The neck is much looser than on my LL Bean parka. Maybe there was a manufacturing error and the parka was cut wrong and quality control failed to catch it. I am returning the item.

Rated 1 out of 5 by Outsidealot from Did not perform Since my old parka is 8 yrs old, I was looking for a replacement. Write-up's and explanation of Turbo Down plus reviews led me to this coat. It arrived on a perfect day to try it out. Mid to low 20s with a N wind 30 to 40 mph with gusts to 50. However, the down pockets, so to speak, didn't look anything like the picture. They were flat and I could feel almost no down, but decided to try it anyway. Wind went right thru it and after only 40 minutes I had to go in because I was really getting cold. Just not what I had expected. Inside of coat felt like an ice cube after I took it off. Warmed up and then headed back out with my old parka and stayed out for almost 2 hours. I'll stick to my old bulky down parka.

Rated 5 out of 5 by TheSpacePope from Great jacket, but runs large. The jacket is great. Very warm. Loads of pockets. Looks great. Basically anything you might need. As a 6'1", 215lb man, I typically order things in a large, but this jacket was swimming on me at that size. I returned it and got a medium, which was perfect. Also, like another customer, I ordered the black (both times) and was sent the gray (both times). Luckily the gray looks nice so I just kept it. Maybe it is hard to distinguish the gray from the black in the warehouse? Who knows.

Rated 5 out of 5 by fonzie56 from Lightweight warmth This parka fits me well and has kept me warm and dry so far this winter. It is waterproof, the water beads up and rolls off. The interior has Columbia's silver reflective material that returns your body heat back to you. The parka is relatively lightweight and comfortable. The fit and finish is very well done. It has ample pockets for storage and other quality features one would expect from a quality manufacturer like Columbia. Having purchased my parka in the camo finish, one snowy day I kept asking my daughter if she could see me. She said she could, so, I can only assume that my camo patterned parka is defective. But, I would still recommend this parka and would definitely make this purchase again.

But I have had it for about a month and the elastic wrist cuffs are stretched out. Pretty disappointing. Have to keep jacket as I gave my other one away. I guess I will bring into this tailor that has done other work for me to see if he can replace the cuffs. So many nice features on this coat except for this.

Rated 5 out of 5 by NegIon from Very warm! This is a very warm coat and it looks great. It's wonderful for working or playing in the snow. It's warm enough that I need to take it off at the grocery store but not too warm for temps of 45-55. The bulk is very low, and from the weight you would think it's a much lighter coat. The shell looks and feels like soft natural material rather than slick and synthetic, a huge plus in my book. The India ink is dark grey, the color of non metallic graphite. There is a very slight sheen, which is probably the water resistance. The hood is roomy and comfortable to flip up over a beanie. I'm very happy with quality and color choice. The sizing guide worked well for me.

Rated 5 out of 5 by SeanMN from Awesome winter coat I wanted a warm winter coat that I could wear over my dress clothes when going to work, or if I'm spending time outside in the winter. There has only been a few cold days here in MN so far, but as of now I'm loving the coat. I find, and my wife agrees, that it's a very sharp looking coat. I like the numerous pockets, all with zippers - including 1 pocket on the inside of the coat. I've never owned a "longer" coat like this, so far I enjoy it, it should help to keep me warm in the wind - comes down to just below my butt for reference. The cuffed sleeves are also nice to have. On sizing: I'm 6'0" 173lbs. My typical size is M, though I sometimes have to go to L - I prefer a "fitted" look to my clothes. For me, I was initially unsure if I needed an M or L, and went with the M. It fits exactly as I had hoped it would. Chest and sleeves are just right. Minor issue: The hood is very large, even when using the adjustment strap, it still engulfs my hatless head.
