Rated 5 out of 5 by from First time buying Columbia and loved it I was looking for a winter jacket/coat but nothing really heavy and uncomfortable. After testing some of my wife's Columbia jackets, I found this jacket and really liked it. I ordered L-size first based on my previous clothes. It runs a bit larger, not a big deal. I ordered a M-size and fits great. Color looks exactly like on the website. Try it and you'll like it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Bang for your buck It is lightweight, warm, and so versatile. It is exactly what I needed for the cold fall and winters. It is a great mid layer jacket that doesn't skip out on it's ability to lock in heat and keep you warm. This soft shell jacket is all that and more! Definitely a winner, especially at that price!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great coat for great price! Bought this coat for my 16 year old son, who hates wearing coats. He plays baseball and is a pitcher so has to have something to keep him warm in the dugout and after night games. He loves this coat. Said he has not gotten cold one time wearing it. It is lightweight but extremely warm!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good winter jacket Purchased this jacket after reading other reviews and decided that this was the best option to endure the Carolina winters with. Pleasantly enough, the jacket arrived a few days before the 1st winter snow hit us in the Triad area so I was able to test it immediately with single digit weather. The jacket did wonderfully repelling water and was very well insulated keeping me warm with just base layer and a long sleeve shirt on. The hood was a nice feature keeping the snow off my neck. Size wise, the jacket is just a bit undersized with the XXL I ordered. But a solid winter climate jacket all around.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very warm and wind resistant I use this jacket for everyday use. I have only had it for about 10 days so I can't speak to durability. So far I love the jacket. I find it very warm especially for how thin and light weight it is. I also find it extremely resistant to wind, which was very important to me. I'm not one to get cold easily until that wind starts howling. Wind cuts through most jackets and chills me to the bone, making it unbearable to make it around the block while walking the dog. This jacket does an excellent job at stopping the wind. Very impressed and very happy with it. It's just the right jacket for me. I'm sure some people may find this jacket falls oddly between too warm for spring and too cold for winter. But for a guy who doesn't get cold easily, walking his dog nightly and early morning in a South Central NJ winter, and commuting to work this is a perfect jacket. Tested in 10 degrees with wind wearing a cotton flannel and was very warm Also I'm medium build 5-9 150 lb and small fit perfect, just large enough to wear an extra layer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I like it Compared to my LHOTSE II, this jacket make that one looks bad. I am very impress with the style of this jacket. The stitching is fantastic not as the LHOTSE II stitching (Columbia I hope you get back to me in regards to that jacket). The quality feels great, soft, protect from winds and most importantly it's warn. A bit long, but you won't be disappointed. I strongly recommend this product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The perfect winter jacket The Gate Racer Softshell is the second Columbia jacket I've bought this winter season and by far my favourite. The colour (pond) is very classy and the fit is absolutely perfect. This jacket is well insulated for a day outside shoveling snow or spending time on the ski hill. I'll have this in my outerwear wardrobe for years to come!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from More than just a shell I was surprised how much more than a shell jacket this is: the fleece lining fabric is in a kind of cell pattern, not super thick but well bonded to the outer jacket and looks like it will be more durable and less likely to pill than I had expected. The jacket is a little longer in length than other soft shells; and the hood is detachable but doesn't look like it is at first glance (which I don't think is mentioned on the product descritption). It is roomy around the shoulders and chest, and long on the sleeve so we chose a size down from usual and it fits well for someone who is usually finds chest and shoulders tight.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Warm when you need it Have comfortably worn this as a single layer in 50s temps, layered down to the high 20s. The pockets are very spacious. And the front pocket with the orange zipper is extremely useful.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Warm, comfy with detachable hood It is difficult to find a men's soft shell jacket with a detachable hood. I bought this jacket for my brother with DS. He requires a jacket that is easy to zip, is warm, adjustable cuffs. and a detachable hood. I like the fact it is stain and water resistant Night Shadow is a nice color, similar to a dark green with an orange zipper. Overall, I have no cons to list, the price was great, it is warm and my brother likes it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good looking and warm A perfect jacket for Portland OR winters. Looks nice enough to go with slacks to the office, casual enough for jeans and hikes, and durable enough to keep in the back seat of the car so it's always there, just in case.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice coat, but a little different than expected I bought this coat for my boyfriend and it turned out to be heavier than what we thought. It seems more like a winter jacket than a soft shell. It is not what we were looking for and will not be keeping it. It is a nice coat for someone looking for a medium-weight winter coat.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The hood is detachable I did not want anything that was too bulky and this coat is just what I needed. I am truly satisfied with my order.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect Jacket I bought this jacket for my boyfriend in a medium. He's 6'2" and weights 165lbs. I'm very pleased with the quality and trendy look of this jacket. It's very soft inside and will be warm for unpredictable KY weather. I am happy with the purchase and would buy again.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Americans Get Bigger? I've been looking to get a new Gate Racer jacket for a few years now, but it wasn't until this latest sale that I finally pulled the trigger. The original Gate Racer that I have and still wear to this day in the winter time was purchased well over seven years ago, so when I went to try on this new Gate Racer I can't help but think that this jacket has now been re-sized for the seemingly ever-growing size of the average American citizen, which isn't meant to be rude. However, I'm around 6' tall and about 175 lbs and the new jacket engulfs me compared my original. There's a lot more waist room and the sleeves are an inch or two longer. I'm hoping to exchange it to try out the Small size, but, unfortunately, Columbia is out of stock on a number of their sizes right now due to the sale.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect Mid-weight Shell Going to get alot of mileage out of this one, and have already. Warm enough in the 20's (or below) but comfortable into the 40's. Plenty of room for light to medium-weight layers too. Can't miss with this one.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Jacket I ordered this for my husband. He does not like thick bulky jackets but needed something to keep him warm on our trip to the mountains. Overall a GREAT jacket. He is quite hot natured so it kept him warm in the 20-30 degree weather but if you are prone to getting cold you may need a thicker jacket or more layering underneath.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Jacket After many years of searching, finally found the perfect jacket for me. Soft, just the right weight, a little longer than a lot of jackets- just what I like. The collar is big enough that it doesn't hit me under the chin, and the hood is nice and deep, with catch drawstrings, and can be removed. Very well designed, a nice smooth look, not a bunch of trim, multi-colored panels, etc. It has long sleeves that don't pull up when I extend my arms.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Mens Gate racer softshell jacket my zipper on an older North Face Jacket broke in the middle of Chicago's winter and my friends turned me onto Columbia and I couldn't be happier. We just got 19 inches of snow and below zero temps and I have to admit that this jacket ROCKS !! Lightweight, Great fit, easy on the eyes (the jacket, not me) and a fraction of the cost of North Face. I've converted to Columbia - Keep it up !!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from good quality & warm Very pleased with the quality of construction. Coat is sized correctly and fits very well. Stay warm even in temps below zero. Not a big fan of the Velcro sleeve closers, but really haven't had to use them.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from warm and moveable Having tried numerous outerwear through the years, I decided to give this a try. Not only is it extremely warm and comfortable, it is very easy to move around in while working. I am a contractor by trade and I would recommend this jacket to anyone looking for cold weather protection.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from more than a softshell This is my first Columbia product. When I bought this I was hoping it would be more than just a softshell and it is.....I have been wearing this jacket as my primary Winter coat for the last month and it's more comfortable than my other 2 coats. If the weather here in Chicago falls below 0 won't wear it....I can tell it's not that warm but 20 degrees or above I will always wear it. Great product!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not enough insulation I have used this jacket 4 times in different temperatures. It is most useful in the temp. range of 45 to 55F. Between 32 and 45F I felt the cold wind. With a sweater inside it is perfect. The larger fit is useful here. A double zip opening in the front would have made it perfect as a car coat, but alas! Gone are the days of creating a perfect item. One zipped pocket should have been included inside. Otherwise OK.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Didn't fit, expensive to return I had read in reviews that this jacket size ran big so I ordered the smaller size. When the jacket arrived (almost 2 weeks later) it was to small for me. It cost $25 to return the jacket. I have ordered the larger size, now have to wait another week + to receive that one.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from I like it. Overall I like the Jacket. It fits well, it's warm, and it keeps me dry. I like that I can remove the hood. The sleeves are a little long but the Velcro allows me to correct for it. I wish there was a pocket on the inside like all of the other jackets I have owned. It feels odd not having one. My only real complaint is with the main zipper. It sticks, especially if I zip it up all the way. It can be very difficult to unzip, sometimes feeling as if it isn't going to unzip at all. It's annoying and frustrating.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A little big, but very warm! The jacket runs a little larger than I normally like, but it is so warm and I appreciate the water-resistant quality (great for snow).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beauty in Simplicity According to Mies Van Der Rohe, less is more. This jacket is a testament to the form-follows-function design milieu, and is thus perfectly fashionable in South Chicago. Let those bourgeois north siders wear their over-priced North Face as a vain attempt to display their middle class social standing; here in the south side, we know what works in the city that works.
