New Ptarmigan Parka I just got the new Ptarmigan upland hunting parka on Feb 17th and had it out in the field on a Pheasant hunt the next day. The temperature was hovering around freezing and there was a stiff north/east breeze with some gusting and very light freezing rain/snow. The coat kept me dry, but I mis-judged the effectiveness of the fleece liner that comes with the coat. I ended up buying an extra shirt in the gun club proshop to layer under the coat to help keep warm. I am 6'-2 1/2" and 200 pounds and I ordered an extra large that fit great and did not restrict my arms to mount the gun. There seem to be water bottle pockets on the sides of the coat which is a good idea, but the bend that you have to make with your arm makes the water bottle end up in the game bag when you try to put the bottle back after use. At one point after trying to get the water bottle back in the bottle slot it ended up in the game bag again and the filp top bottle opened and the contents drained out, but at least the waterproof lining in the game bag kept me from getting wet! When pushing through heavy brush the coat did not snag or hold on to burrs. February 27, 2012
Great features Parka has great features and is well constructed. I do wish the underarm openings allowed more room when zipped closed, however, this is a minor concern. Overall, I could not find a better coat for the money. January 27, 2012
Ptarmigan Hunting Jacket is great. I received my jacket about a week ago and wore it "casually" for three days in mildy cold weather just to get used to its feel and function. I then went chasing bunnies on a cold and blustery day. The jacket performs flawlessly. It didn't even notice the briars I got into and it held my 4 rabbit limit in its easily accessable game pouch. This jacket replaces a Canvas Back jacket that I had for at least 30 years. I expect this will hold up that long as long as I don't continually get caught up in briar patches. The zip-in/out liner makes it versatile for wam or cold weather outings and its tightly-woven construction should shed water nicely for quite a while before I get wet. January 6, 2012
Ptarmigan II upland parka I ordered a size larger than normal for layering and it fits well. With the fleece lining, the parka is a lot warmer than just the Ptarmigan vest, which I also own. Under arm zippers for ventilation allow temperature moderation. The side pockets and game bag have snaps for expansion. I was watching for this coat to show up in the Outlet, but managed to do my own markdown using an Columbia store reward credit and a seasonal 20% markdown with free shipping. December 22, 2011
Great For Hunting This is the best all-around hunting coat - Great for all types of weather. Used at 20 Degress F Below and 45 Degress F above Zero. Add the liner and you are good for any temperature. GREAT BUY November 4, 2011
Better than Browning I purchased this parka and could not be happier with it. It fits just like my Black Butte parka I picked up a couple of years ago. I purchased a L and the sleeves are the perfect length and the cut of the jacket does not interfere when you pull up to take a shot. Plenty of pockets for whatever you want to carry and the vest is just the right weight. December 29, 2010
