JI49 Very good quality and style.Length good but runs a little small in waist April 20, 2013
Columbia is the best Great Pair of shorts for my lifestyle. These are durable for outdoors activities and look good enough to wear out on a date. Cant beat the guarantee either April 3, 2013
New Go-to Shorts! I have been looking for a new go-to pair of shorts for a couple years since North Face discontinued their A5 Utility Shorts. I have finally found them!!!These meet all my requirements:InseamI'm 5'8", and I don't like my shorts to hang way below my knees. Call me old fashioned, but it's not functional. Also, I wear shorts all the time. Long, baggy shorts just don't look good with a nice dress shirt going out to dinner or on the golf course.MaterialA lot of hiking shorts are synthetic or nylon material. While these may be okay for a trek or rafting adventure, they aren't so great for everyday casual wear. I like the 100% cotton look and feel. They are canvas, so they are tough and durable, but they feel a lot softer than some other brands' canvas. These go the extra distance with OmniShield. Trust me, wear a pair of shorts golfing a few times above 90 degrees, and you will see them discolored. While I haven't put these through the ringer on the links yet, the fact that they resist stains is great!PocketsPockets are well placed and sized. The lack of cargo pockets is nice because it allows you to wear them in more upscale locations without standing out. Sure the small specialized phone pocket doesn't fit a smartphone, but big deal. I also read some complaints that the back pockets don't zip. Really? Do your jeans have zipped back pockets? Not necessary.I have 3 pairs in different colors. I also bought one pair of the cargo version. Exactly the same with cargo pockets and a 10" inseam. Still above my knees, and a little more rugged looking because of the cargos.I rated 4 stars just because I haven't had them long enough to determine durability. Hopefully they last a few years. Solid all-around value This is the second pair of this type shorts, however, one change was made since my last purchase. The connector at the top of the zipper has been changed from a metal button to a metal clip connector. The only shortcoming to a perfect functionality is that the new connector has a tendency to pop open under some stressful activity. Otherwise, they are a great buy for all-season use. Buy These Sure they are just shorts, BUT they are my Favorite pair I own! Semi water proof, very durable, and if you spill, or get blood, or fish slime on them... splash it with water, and they are clean-ish? November 8, 2012
Disappointed in the changes. I have three pair of the previous generation of denim shorts which I really liked but they are worn out so I wanted to replace them. There are many less desireable features in these shorts compared with my old ones: The fabric on these new shorts seems more flimsy or a lighter weight fabric, like something I would find at Target. The finish seems rougher. The zipper (ideal, metal) feels resistant and catchy or rough like it will soon break, even though brand new. The old zipper (YKK, nylon) still functions perfectly and smoothly. The new button looks like a shotgun shell when closed. I like the old one better. I liked the right side security zipper pocket located in same place as regular pocket. The new one has zip pocket down the leg. Too hokey for me. I want my wallet where I can feel it. I miss the velcro pocket closures of the old shorts. Finally the pictures on the website completely got the color wrong. When I received the shorts I was surprised at the color. But I'm too lazy to go to the trouble to exchange them which would probably mean going downtown to the store... October 4, 2012
Great short for short legged people Most cargo type shorts are too long. I'm hard to fit with a 29" inseam but this 9" short hits perfectly at the knees. September 26, 2012
Good looking and comfortable shorts I bought several pairs of shorts this year and these are definitely my favorites. They feel so soft and smooth. Rugged enough for mountain hiking but then still good looking enough for an evening out. Color is a very pleasant dark green. September 23, 2012
Most comfortable short I have every worn. I live and work in the tropics and these shorts are perfect for everyday wear around the office/docks. August 26, 2012
the snap button? Columbia come on why try to innovate something tried and true like the traditional button. I used to love your pants and shorts but your snap but is horrible. I hike, climb, hunt, fly fish and golf. The snap always comes undone. It gets worse over time. I refuse to buy from Columbia as long as they use this fastener! August 18, 2012
disappointment The fit is not comparable to past Columbia shorts. Slightly larger than I expected; no velcro on the back pockets; and my main complaint is no longer is the 7.5 inseam offered, and because of the side pocket placement they cannot be shortened. August 11, 2012
As expected Great short, as advertised. Only problem I have is when you step into the short the lower right zippered pocket can catch your toes on the inside. Great short overall and would recommend to others! August 10, 2012
Good - but need improvement I bought two pair of these shorts to replace 2 pairs of their predecessors and, at first, found them really quite nice. However, after wearing them twice (and washing them once) I noticed two things that caused me concern.First - the front clasp button. I thought that the new style button was unique and slim lined. But unless you are wearing a belt (which I prefer not to wear with shorts) they are not very effective. About 80% of the time I sat down or bent over to pick something up - the button pops open. I usually get a bigger size in any pant I buy so that they can shrink to my waist (34). These shorts were quite a bit larger than expected (large 36") and the button is already popping open. They haven't even begun to shrink to my waist size. I am very dissapointed in this and am looking into having them altered/changed with a different option to replace the clasp button.Second - the material. I am not a "thin" person nor am I fat. I am mostly"athletic" with muscular, thick legs. My legs rub togetheras I walk, so as you can imagine, the material is already starting to become "lint frayed" in the crotch.Other than that they are very nice looking, comfortable, versatile and the pocket space is very ample. In my opinion, they are (obviously)not the same as their predecessors and need a retooling to make them great. August 9, 2012
Good, but ... These are excellent shorts, good quality, nicely constructed, but I have to be honest, I liked the prior version design (AM 4194 - made in Nicaragua) more than this current version (AM 4541 - made in Srilanka). The currently available version lacks several features of the older version which I expected and was disappointed to find missing: Velcro pocket closures, a cell phone pocket, and a double right-side pocket with a zipper on one of them. This later version does have a separate zipper pocket on the lower right side, but it's not as convenient as the double pocket design was.On the plus side, both seem to be made of the same heavy-duty pebble-grained cotton fabric, overall construction is good on both, and the redesigned waist snap fastener above the fly is significantly better. You'll like these, especially if you've never worn the earlier version. July 23, 2012
Don't mess with success! Columbia!! Ma Boyle! Please go back to the old ROC design! The low zip pocket on the side is useless! The zippered pocket inside/parallel to the right pocket was much more functional and convienient. I have loved and purchased your products for over a decade, the fit and durability is unmatched! But the new design changes in the past few years have not been for the better! Please go back to the old design or at least offer the "Classic ROC" shorts! July 16, 2012
Good shorts Wish they were also offered with a 6" inseam. Gotta add - Columbia will spam email you to review the product if you give them your email address when you check out online. I definitely did not check any box to opt-in to any email marketing stuff but got an email anyway. July 6, 2012
The snap is car ap Great looking short, the stitching is awesome, quality product except the snap is constantly popping open. Loose the snap and I will buy again. July 5, 2012
Discount Store Quality In prior years my Columbia shorts were substantially sized and quality material. This year the material was very thin, feels shoddy and easily wrinkles when worn. These are not the Columbia quality I have received in the past. July 1, 2012
Ultimate ROC Shorts These shorts have a zipper security pocket, but it is practically at knee level, so not easy to get into or hold items and zipper is clearly visible. I have an older pair of Columbia shorts with the security zipper pocket aligned with the right pocket, which is far superior. This is what I thought I was getting--the description for the ROC doesn't mention the security pockets as almost like cargo-shorts pocket. Not what I was looking for. June 25, 2012
Great shorts, clasp needs help I have a few pairs of these shorts and I really like them. The fastener doesn't always work though, so I have to return this pair. At least customer service was very helpful! May 30, 2012
roc shorts not as good as the discontinued 02233 shorts I loved! Sad to say they are not the same - fabric has less comfortable hand and the fit is not as good. May 18, 2012
I like them I like my new ROC shorts, they fit very comfortably and I wouldn't change a thing. March 18, 2012
Men’s Ultimate ROC™ Short Great shorts at a great value. Thank you. January 29, 2012
good short satisfy with this short. January 9, 2012
high price with below average quality At one time Columbia had shorts that looked very similar to the one they offer today. The new shorts are maid of very thin material and will not stand up to numerous washings. I know because I did just that, washed them 6 times to test the new material and they did not hold up. I will be sending back the others I had ordered . December 27, 2011
Men's Ultimate Roc Short Looks good and fits just right. I particularly like that it was not made in China. November 2, 2011
great pair of shorts perfect weight to the material, excellent quality. fit great and very flattering. October 4, 2011
Best Shorts I've Owned!!! I love these shorts! Omni-Shield™ keeps my shorts nice and clean, the fit is perfect, good length, love the side zipper pocket. Only flaw i noticed is that when you put them on your feet get stuck in one of the pockets but no problem cause you only put them on once a day September 14, 2011
My new favorites. All the comfort and convenience of a cargo short, with a cleaner look. September 5, 2011
ROC Shorts It was a beautiful fit and I just love it. thanks August 17, 2011
length is ok but waist is small great shortbut the waist size runs a tad small. also, the length could be a little longer. im 6'1" and it came a little above my knee. i think 12" long shorts are best for anyone 6' or taller. August 1, 2011
Great shorts These are great but I knew they would be as I also have the pants in the same style and color. July 13, 2011
Comfort at it best Light weight and comfortable. Will handle the tuff stuff too. Fir the money you cant beat these shorts. July 11, 2011
Service,Style and Comfort Most comfortable shorts I ever wear. April 26, 2011
nice look Do miss the cargo pockets, but like the new snap, verus the regular button. The shorts fit really well, started wearing them right out of the shipping box. April 9, 2011
almost perfect soft, stain resistant, soft, durable, soft and well accessorized. why not a perfect short? 13" option would make it there August 10, 2010
Great pair of shorts These shorts have a great feel. They are soft to the touch, yet have a rugged outdoor look. They also are very roomy for the sizing. I would suggest these to anyone working or playing in the outdoors. July 29, 2010
Almost got it right I like this short, but the pocket design is awful. On the inside of the short the top and bottom pockets are sewn together, but not to the shorts on all sides. The pockets are sewn to the bottom of the short creating a area for your foot to catch when you put them on. April 27, 2010
